Swim
Comments: My swim was okay. This was my first triathlon so I had only heard stories of how physical the start was. I got kicked and/or punched a few times, but managed to find my stroke eventually. I had some funky indigestion going on where I had to burp every 30-40 strokes or so. I think it was from the previous nights dinner. Wetsuit was chaffing against my neck as well. I really misapplied my bodyglide. What would you do differently?: I think I ate too much and too close to bed time the night before. Try to tone it down next time. Apply bodyglide to the correct part of neck. It looked like a giant burn the next day. Transition 1
Comments: It seemed faster than 3 minutes, but there's plenty I can do to improve here. The transition was kinda wonky cuz we had to stuff everything into a garbage bag to get transported to T2 after the race What would you do differently?: Helmet on at the same time as taking the suit off. I hadn't thought of that one. Bike
Comments: I liked this course and didn't think the hills were too bad. I thought the road was really rough heading out to Boonville and back. This combined with my harder than normal effort contributed to some extra soreness in the legs/butt/groin area. It was weird cuz I've done 40+ mile rides and not been that sore afterwards What would you do differently?: More saddle time. Transition 2
Comments: Legs were really stiff coming off the bike. It was a pain to pull running gear out of the bag. What would you do differently?: With a normal transition area gear would be laid out and I wouldn't have to dig for it. Run
Comments: Who thought it was a good idea to go uphill in the last mile?! Man, that was rough. Thankfully I had found my legs after the first 3 miles and was running fairly well by then. I felt great and was passing lots of people. I saw my family and girlfriend about a mile from the finish and that gave me a great boost too. What would you do differently?: My training bike-run bricks hadn't quite prepared me for this. Maybe do a few longer ones. Post race
Warm down: A lot of walking and stretching and stuffing my face afterwards. What limited your ability to perform faster: Indigestion on the swim. Lack of miles on the bike. Lack of transition practice. And of course mental toughness (there were some low points during all three events in which I questioned my sanity) Event comments: I finished my first triathlon!!!!!!! I'm hooked and there's going to be many more races to come. Hy-Vee did a great job putting this on with all the adversity they had to deal with in the weeks preceding. I exceeded my own expectations and now know that I have a sub 2:30 in me. Time to revisit my goals :) Last updated: 2008-06-20 12:00 AM

I slept about 3, maybe 4 hours. Just too much nervous energy and trying to go to bed early so I could wake up at 3:15 was too much for me. I ate some peanut butter on toast with a banana and then drove to Des Moines.
None so to speak of. I had to run to the bike tent to get a bar end plug. I know they were both there when I checked my bike in the night before. Would someone actually steal one of those? Thankfully they had extras.
