Pre-race routine:

This is my "home" race -- takes blacks walking distance from my house. Woke up at 5am, breakfast of toast w/ peanut butter and a banan. Walked to the site and helped the volunteers with a couple final prep things. Setup my transition area and found a shady spot to wait for the start. Stretched.
Event warmup:

3 block ez run, stretch.
Swim
  • 14m 51s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt great. No panicking in the water and good breathing throughout. A huge improvement from doing this race two years ago, my first ever, where I had to completely concentrate on not hyperventaliting.
What would you do differently?:

Take a couple corners tighter. I lost time by being a good 25-30 feet outside the bouys.
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Better, but still want to shave off more time. Had a different routine and had watched the BT video on getting the wetsuit off. It helped a ton. I think I can shave 20 more seconds of by experimenting more.
What would you do differently?:

Think about biking sockless. I also need road bike shoes -- still using my mountain bike shoes which are harder to get on.
Bike
  • 44m 55s

  • 18.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good. Rode aggressively for me, attacking downhills and flats and keeping a nice cadence on the hills. If my Garmin was right and I did 19.7mph, I'm pleased. I still, though, want to break 20mph in a race. Only done it on training rides.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Perfect, for me. Rode the final 30 yards with my shoes unclipped, hopped off and ran my bike quickly to my spot, threw my running shoes on, grabbed a gel pack, and took off. If I can do sub-1-minute T2's, I'm content.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 23m 25s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt pretty good. Thought I would have had a more negative split, but I ran about the same speed after the turnaround as I did before.
What would you do differently?:

Start a tad slower, and speed up more at the turnaround.

Event comments:

I love this race, and not just because it is by my house. Great volunteers, great venue. It would be nice to have more of a country setting for the bike, but this is a pretty developed part of town. Was the perfect day for a race. Perfect.

I'm please with my time. When I did this race two years ago, I ranked 210th overall. Today, I ranked 111th. Great to see that my more intensive training has been having an impact.

My pace on the race website says 18.7 mph, but my reliable Garmin said 19.7. I think something was a bit off with the race info, because I'm sure my Garmin was within .1-.2 mph.
Wind: Little
Course: Flat at the beginning, 3-4 moderate / tough rollers in the middle, and then turnaround and do it backwards. A couple nice, long straightaways to get your speed up.

Matches my Garmin.
Course: Great run course. Besides a couple small hills, it is flat. And it is SHADED. I'd say 2/3 of this run is through the woods with nice shade.
