Pre-race routine:

Up at 4 am, in car by 4:45 (I did laundry). Breakfast on the way out the door was a yogurt and a bagel with peanut butter. Realize at 5:00 am that I forgot my drinks -DOH! Stop at Mobil for gatorade....Arrive later than I planned, but with plenty of time to set up and get marked.
Event warmup:

A little swimming
Swim
  • 32m 55s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Choppier than I expected at one point...I don't know if it was boat traffic or what. They just had a line of buoys separating the two directions, and at one point swimmers headed out were swimming into swimmers headed in...but no catastrophes happened that I know of. I felt ok on this swim though I was sick of it at the end..I may change my mind about how I did when I see my time though.
What would you do differently?:

Probably not much
Transition 1
  • 03m 53s
Comments:

Not much to say. It occurred to me during the swim that I should have clipped my shoes in and run in socks, but the ground was pretty soft and my socks would have gotten damp, so it's good that I forgot about that.
What would you do differently?:

Probably not much.
Bike
  • 1h 20m 10s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.60 mile/hr
Comments:

I love this course, although I was really feeling yesterday's ride on the hills. I was stronger on them than I expected, although I still definitely need some work. I'm pretty happy with my ride though and I feel like I did a really good job spinning up the hills (as opposed to mashing up them). Also I think I did better at not pushing so much...I rode harder than I probably should have, but not as hard as I would have liked to. A couple of times I was passed by women from my wave (one of which I caught on the run :) ) and I resisted the urge to chase.
What would you do differently?:

I dunno, maybe save more for the run...but I would have had to slow down by a couple of MPH to really gain any benefit on that run, so I don't know if it would have helped anyway.
Transition 2
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

This was ordinary...not much to say here. I kept my shoes on until into transition..again, glad I did because my feet would have gotten muddy.
Run
  • 1h 02m 49s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm not too dissapointed in my time, although I know it's really REALLY slow...trail running is not my forte and this is a TOUGH trail run with a couple of steep hills and one really long gradual one. I had to walk a little, but I tried to pick up my pace on the second lap. I didn't get any faster but my stride got more comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Train for a hilly trail run.
Post race
Warm down:

STand around and bs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Riding 50 miles yesterday.

Event comments:

Even though this is an overall fun race that I'd definitely do again, I'd like to see a few things change:

Better food...all there was was bananas, chips and pretzels. And water (no gatorade post race).

Gatorade (or something like it) at both aid stations on the run, not just one.

Add a fluid station to the Oly bike course.

Add a timing mat at the beginning of the second lap of the Oly, so splits are available and no cheating (apparently a few people didn't run the second lap, although I can see how it could have been confusing. I was confused).

On the plus side, TONS of friendly, knowledgable volunteers, organization was very good, and the locale can't be beat.
