Swim
Comments: Felt pretty good with the swim. I forgot to start my watch when the swim started, so I had no frame of reference when I got to the halfway point. I think I may have improved my performance if I had this data. I breast-stroked a couple times, because I didn't feel I was sighting good enough. I also rolled on my back a couple times when I lost my breath. What would you do differently?: Swim more than twice in the two months leading up to a triathlon :( Seriously, I'm not sure, other than better training, there's much I could have done differently. I probably could have been more aggressive, but I didn't know what to expect when I got out of the water. (even though I don't know the time yet) I'm happy with the swim. Transition 1
Comments: This was okay. (According to official time, it's even worse then I thought.) My suit got stuck on my timing chip, but I remained calm, and moved to get the other leg out before worrying about it. I took too long to get my shoes on, too long to get my helmet on, too long to stuff a gel I didn't use into my suit, and too long toget my bike off the rack, and get moving with it. What would you do differently?: PRACTICE MORE. Also, I need to get better at getting on the bike without stopping dead. Even though this counts in the bike time, since it happens after you go over the timing mat, I still need to improve. I also have to know what nutrition I'm going to use, and have it in the suit already. Bike
Comments: This was a hard, hard course. I felt like I was going uphill the entire time. There were some good downhills, but I guess I never really felt them. The course was generally smooth, but there were some bad parts. The RD did a pretty good job of marking them out. Considering it was a MUCH harder course than Willow, I'm happy with the ride. While I probably could have pushed harder, I would have had even less left for the run. It was very hot and humid, and I've never trained in those conditions, so I have to take that into consideration as well. What would you do differently?: Hydrate better during the bike. I think given my level of training up to this point, I'm happy with the ride. Transition 2
Comments: This was way slower than it should be. It just took too long to do everything. I think it was so hot. I did take a moment to swig back more water before I left. Racked bike (was okay), but then I had to walk around the bike to get to my run stuff. WTF? Put socks on, put shoes on, grabbed swig of water, grabbed hat and number belt and took off. What would you do differently?: Again, I need to practice laying out my area, and the transition itself. I probably could have avoided some of the issues I had if I was laid out better. I also need to learn to take my shoes off while I'm on the bike. this would save me some time as well. Perhaps learn to run without socks? I bike sockless, so this would be a natural progression. Run
Comments: I thought the bike was hard. The run was way worse. I just need to run way more. I am completely unaccustomed to the hills, and since I was already spent on the bike, I was pretty much done. I did run some, but there was just no way I was running the whole thing. I probably ran close to half. The last mile, I was just doing 120 steps of run, 120 steps of walk. There was, however in the last 3/4 mile a girl in my age group just ahead of me. She was running the whole time, but slowly, so that when I walked, she got a little ahead of me, and when I ran, I made the distance back up. I knew that as long as I kept her close enough, I could beat her, and therefore not be last in my age group ;) We came to the last, say 200 metres, just as we exited the trails, and were back on the road, and I started running. I sprinted (sort of) the rest of the way in. What would you do differently?: Run the whole thing. I just don't think I could have. It was oppresively hot, and between the hilly bike and the hilly run, I think I gave it a good effort Post race
Warm down: Drink. Alot. Of. Water... Ate some pizza, and a tootsie roll. Talked to Dwayne for a bit. What limited your ability to perform faster: The heat was definitely a major factor. Apparently it was 93 with the humidity. I tried to hydrate, but I think I could have done a better job. The course was the other factor. It was a tough, tough course. Event comments: Mile markers on the run would have been nice (they only had Mile 2 marked). Oh, and having the swim bike run pics in the right order on the front of the tshirt ;) Good race. Don't know if I'd do it again (it is FAR and HARD), but will definitely consider it for next year. Last updated: 2005-05-09 12:00 AM

Drove up and picked up the race packet the night before. Stayed in a local hotel. Watched Harry Potter & ate greasy pizza & breadsticks. Yummy. When we got to the hotel, I was putting the front wheel back on my bike, and I managed to rip my thumbnail partially off. OWWWW! Thankfully it wasn't an issue by morning. Had a soak in a hot tub, and went to be about 11:30pm.
Had a pretty crappy sleep. Both of us were up probably every hour or so. There was no reason, the room was comfortable, etc. I think the bed was too big ;)
Woke up at about 5:15am and got everything packed up and ready to go. Had a breakfast of buttered english muffin (I have got to improve this part of the race).
It was really hot, so I didn't do much. Walked back and forth, and up and down hills to go from the truck to TA, and back to where D was. After the Oly had started, I got my wetsuit on, and headed down to the water. It was cold, but nowhere near as cold as my OW swim last week, and it was so hot anyway, it felt good. Swam a few strokes, and headed back up the beach to wait.
