Swim
Comments: The jellyfish and lack of current made for a more challenging swim than I was expecting. This was my 5th NYC Tri and the lack of current and jellyfish were a first. Last year my swim time was 21 minutes, this year 35. I was pacing myself for 20 minutes in the water (as I was too preoccupied to notice that I wasn't drifting downstream when i got in the water at 7:36) and the extra effort took its toll on the run later in the day. Only ran into one jellyfish and the suit took most of the pain so I'm not going to complain. What would you do differently?: Read the current better and pace appropriately. Transition 1
Comments: Applied Pam liberally and it worked well. I stopped during the long run to T1 and pulled off the suit on a bench. Good call. What would you do differently?: Not much. It's a long run and my timw was consistent with earlier years. Bike
Comments: Pushed in on the bike and dropped 2 minutes from my best NYC tri time. Started great but fell into a lull in the middle of the course and slowed a bit. Picked it back up as I chased a few faster bikers on the way down. Need to keep a higer tempo and speed but generally pleased. What would you do differently?: Have to keep pushing the entire ride. Transition 2
Comments: A bit slow for this race but I had to towel off my head and glasses because of the humidity. Run
Comments: On any other day I would have been very disappointed in my run (last year was 49min) but given the conditions, the bike effort, and the extra time in the water I'll take it. Planned on taking the first mile easy and then picking it up but I couldn't get it going. Felt my HR climbing and my legs didn't respond so I played it safe and backed down (a post race check of my HR showed 180 average and peaks over 190 which is a bit beyond my normal redline). What would you do differently?: Short of training in the heat/humidity (I was traveling the previous two weeks in cooler climates) and/or pushing it to the extreme, not much. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of brick workouts and humidity. Despite my poor time (17 minutes slower than last year) it was a fair performance given the circumstances. The poor swimming and good biking results are directly correlated to my training efforts. Funny how that works..... Event comments: It was a tough day for everyone. Sad to learn that a competitor died during the swim. Still haven't decided if the race director should have announced the jellyfish issue (he didn't). Overall, it was well organized like always. My favorite race of the year. Last updated: 2008-06-24 12:00 AM
