Overall Rank = 257/458
Age Group = F 30-34
Age Group Rank = 11/26
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:00, drank an Instant Breakfast and coffee. Drove to the race site and arrived really early. Got set up and had a banana, some water and two gels 15 minutes apart about 30 minutes before the race start.
Event warmup:

Stretched in transition, then spent about 10 minutes in the water getting comfortable with the temperature.
Swim
  • 13m 26s
  • 437 yards
  • 03m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

After a good warm-up, I expected to do better, but this was my first tri and I struggled to get into a rhythm. I ended up backstroking about 200m and stayed at the BOP the entire time. The men's wave behind me caught up around the time I was finishing.
What would you do differently?:

I should have tried harder to get comfortable in freestyle. I had a good warm-up and knew I could do it, but I panicked and did what I needed to finish. I need to keep working on my open water swimming.
Transition 1
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

I felt very slow in T1, likely from the struggle in the swim. I wanted to move faster and just couldn't.
What would you do differently?:

Get more comfortable with the swim so I'm not so beat moving into T1.
Bike
  • 39m 17s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt great on the bike and with the flat course, was able to ride a faster pace than usual.
What would you do differently?:

I'd like to work on my speed, but for this race, I exceeded my goal.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Much faster in this transition. I felt really good and was actually anxious for the run.
What would you do differently?:

I should have speed laces, I meant to get them and just didn't have time.
Run
  • 24m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

I was thrilled with this run. I set a 5K PR and the fact that it was during my first tri was phenomenal.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. It was just right.
Post race
Warm down:

I immediately went to the showers on the boardwalk and soaked myself, which felt amazing. I drank three waters, ate some pancakes and oreos, then rode my bike to the ferry (about 4.5 miles) and then home (about 2 miles).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I took my first swimming lesson ever (never swam as a child) on May 9. I've been swimming 3-5 days a week, but only really started to improve last week. My swimming definitely held me back, otherwise, I was very pleased with my bike and run. This was my first tri so I learned a lot and will do better on the next one.

Event comments:

It seemed like a good first race. I was really happy with the experience.

Performance: Good
Heart rate was really high at the start and made it difficult to settle into a pace.
Course: Flat out-and-back course along the boardwalk. It was really hot and there was no shade. They had a really nasty watermelon tasting drink that I could not stomach and water was too hard to get without stopping so I only had a few sips the entire run, but felt hydrated from the bike.
