Swim
Comments: Great swim for me, considering the lack of time I put into it. I was comfortable and moving well, except when I got to slower swimmers and had to put the brakes on. This affected me by getting me out of synch with breathing and stroke. What would you do differently?: Get to front of pack, rather than try to navigate the pack from behind. Don't hold back so much. I was going slow to conserve energy, but I plenty left once out of the water. I need to strike a balance between too fast and too slow. This was too slow a pace. Transition 1
Comments: LONG transition from lake side of transition to bike mount. I ran with shoes in hand to mount point, put shoes on, then got on bike. What would you do differently?: Get the protective cleat covers I saw others using, so they could run in their shoes. Bike
Comments: Should have hammered this but got too complacent passing a bunch of people, which gave me the illusion I was doing better than I actually was. What would you do differently?: Hammer the bike portion of this race. I never got out of the big gear and still only averaged 16.8mph...way too lazy of a pace. My run is going to suck anyway, so why leave more energy for it? Transition 2
Comments: Took in some Gatorade and made good time to run. What would you do differently?: Nothing, except move faster. Run
Comments: Just didn't get it done, and I should have pushed harder. When I finished, my wife said I looked calm and relaxed. True, but this wasn't a Sunday stroll, I should have been ready to spew Gatorade. What would you do differently?: Get mentally tougher about running. Post race
Warm down: Happiness is a cold bottle of chocolate milk, which I kept in my transition area in a cooler. Think of it as a celebratory cigar, but better. :) What limited your ability to perform faster: I held back too much at times I should have been pushing. I could have swam faster and biked faster, risking a bonk on the run. Event comments: Great first race for me. I learned a lot, and I will be taking those lessons with me on to Jerseyman '08! Got to transition at 5:45, set up bike area, got out a Clif Bar, Gatorade, Ipod, and went down to lake to chill out, listen to some tunes and have breakfast.
Just some light stretching, felt the temp of the water by wading, and got mentally ready to swim. Water is my favorite place to be, so I had placed minimal training into it, but I needed my head in the right place.
