Comments:

I felt great from start to finish. The weather was perfect -- overcast w/little to no precipitation, no sun. It wasn't too hot or too cold at any point, even through the snowfield. The cool breeze above the treeline was a relief from the mugginess of the lower half of the mountain. About two-thirds of the way back down the mountain, my quads started to fatigue and I got serious cramps in my side. I continued to descend as fast as I could while keeping control and dodging falling rocks, and maneuvered well through the waterfalls. I hit the road, and the crowd was roaring. I kept my momentum from the bottom of the mountain as long as possible, but soon it felt like my bodyweight had doubled. I found a guy I'd been tailing the whole race and lost track of toward the top. I stuck with him until the final quarter mile, and pulled ahead. I felt much better than last year, and actually kept a good pace on the run back.
What would you do differently?:

Train more throughout the year, watch my eating habits, and don't take the typical yearly winter-long break from training and diet. I was around 200lbs at race time, and I plan to be easily 185 by next year. Also, I'd pass more people when I get the opportunity rather than hang back as much as I did this time.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing. Drank water, talked about the race, and did a little stretching and walking. Nothing much.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I hung behind one guy for the whole top half of the mountain, and I could have shaved at least a minute or two if I'd gone ahead. Not his fault, I should have made the pass.

Event comments:

I love this race, and I plan on competing every year as long as my body holds out. There is so much support from volunteers, spectators, and fellow racers. Every racer is shown the utmost respect for merely finishing the race.

Performance: Good
About 1hr to peak, about 15 minutes back to mtn. base, and 4 minutes to finish.
Course: .5 mile to base of mountain, 3022 ft climb to peak (about 1 mile distance), descend, and .5 mile back to finish. I took the 'rabbit hole' as my entrance to the mountain as opposed to the roots. That took me to the trail through the trees. Halfway pt is at the treeline, where it turns from dirt trail to scree as you climb the ridge of the mountain. At the peak, you run around the turnaround rock, and begin descent through the snowfield, which was about 400 yards at race time. After the snowfield, you cross the ridge and sprint down the chute, through waterfalls and larger rocks in the gut of the mountain, and proceed back to the rabbit hole where I exited the mountain. Then sprint the .5 mile back to finish.
