Swim
Comments: started slowly and got into a nice rhythm until *CRACK*!!! I caught an elbow in the side of the face. It knocked me backwards and turned my goggles inside out. That was the first time that had ever happened to me before in probably a half dozen races. After I regained my senses I actually got back into a good rhythm until the very end. What would you do differently?: I think I should have continued swimming once I got close to the finish. I must have had it in the back of my head that becuase the lake wasn't very deep - I would start walking. Would have been great if I hadn't sunk 4 inches into pond scum. Transition 1
Comments: still not too smooth getting out of the wetsuit once it gets to getting it off my ankles. I think I also rode too far before I tried to strap my feet into my bike shoes. Bike
Comments: I wanted to try to cycle at a high cadence for the first ten minutes or so and warm up my legs. I think i should only do it for 5 minutes instead. The past couple of races I have gotten burned out in the early going and I figured I'd like to try something new. It literally took me 30 minutes until I could get a decent cadence in a small cog/big gear and just mash. the last 4 or 5 miles I really started to warmup. i passed some other racers but couldn't determine if they were people in my wave/age group or people doing the duathlon. Didn't matter - I wanted to pass as many as I could and the last handful of miles I was blowing by people at about 27 mph. What would you do differently?: If only I could get to 25, 26, 27 mph in the first 5 miles of the race. It seems as if I'm always around 18 or 19 mph until I get warmed up the last few miles. Transition 2
Comments: nothing to do any different here. What would you do differently?: see above Run
Comments: The faster I get on my bike the slower I get in the run. The only time I have run slower than this was when I walked the first 1.5 miles of the Wildwood triathlon in '06 and it took me 45 minutes. I started to get a cramp in my right calf probably less than 1/4 mile into the run. I stopped and stretched and it did not bother me again. So I can't use it as an injury excuse. Oh well. The fastest 5k in a triathlon I have done is about 29 minutes. Can I please find some way of running this part of the race in about 24 or 25 minutes. Really. That type of run would drop me into the 1:16 ballpark. Not bad for 240lbs of NOT solid muscle. What would you do differently?: same thing as every other run - leg it out. I really wasn't out of breath. My legs feel like they won't move though. One of these days I'm gonna give 100%. We'll see how I do at NJ State in two weeks. Post race
Warm down: stretch and watch the rest of the finishers. What limited your ability to perform faster: weight (240 lbs). I don't push hard enough on the run. One of these days I'll do it. Event comments: Race reports of last year's race almost scared me off but it seems as if DQ was on the ball this year. I can't think of anything that I would qualify even as a HICCUP. Very good race and great bike course. May make it into my group of races for next year. Last updated: 2008-07-08 12:00 AM

Woke up at 5AM and jumped into the shower to loosen up a little. My stuff was already packed so all I had to do was toast my bagel with peanut butter. Great breakfast - Accelerade and a PB on a bagel. Ready to go! Jumped in the car, stopped at Wawa for 12 oz of coffee and some water and I was at the race site in 45 minutes. Parked the car and grabbed my bike. I didn't pre-register so I rode down to the firehouse to register. Signed my check, picked-up my bag and rode back down into the transition area. I set up at the end of a rack close to the run in from the swim.
went for a 1/2 mile jog, then returned to transition. Gulped down some Shot Blocs and some water (7AM) and started to stretch. Finished stretching and checked my tire pressure and other gear. Put my wetsuit on at about 7:45 and made sure that I wouldn't have any mishaps with the zipper this time like I did in Charleston.
