Swim
Comments: The first 100 yds were pretty tough. Still not accustomed to starting a swim with 40 other people at one time. Made the water very choppy. I started closer to the front this year but got swam over a bit. Kicking, pushing, the whole works. Made it very difficult for me to navigate - couldn't see turn around buoy for a while due to choppy water. Goggles fogged up a bit and I ended up heading a bit off course. Lost my watch within about first 100 yards. After the turn around the pack started to spread out and that made for easier swimming and navigation. I felt pretty good at the end but was disappointed to find out I was about 30 sec slower than last year. Found out after the race that somehow my wet suit tore in the crotch. What would you do differently?: I just need more experience in full contact swimming. Had more open water training this year but could still do more. Transition 1
Comments: Pushed it to go faster in transition this year and did about 30 sec faster than last year - and this year I had a wet suit to take off! Wet suit strippers are great! Legs were a bit wobbly while putting shoes on. The pull-tight shoe laces really helped! Hoping next year to shave it down to under 2 minutes. What would you do differently?: Not sure just need to keep trying to get quicker! Bike
Comments: Got on bike and found out bike computer wasn't working!! I had no idea how fast or what my pace was for the entire ride since I had no bike computer or watch! So I just tried to push myself as much as I could. My goal was to average 21 MPH this year. I found out later that I came really close. i actually thought I might be a little faster but not quite. Next year I want to do at least 22. The bike route is nice and flat - my favorite part of the race. What would you do differently?: More bike workouts, maybe target some specific aspects of biking to build up more speed. Cage pedals made my toes go numb. Transition 2
Comments: Was a good transition for me. Took on some gatorade while racking bike. Hoping to get it down to under one minute next time. What would you do differently?: move with even more urgency Run
Comments: Running is usually one of my weakest events. This year I was pleased to beat last year's time by about 30 seconds. The bike made my toes numb and my butt sore so it took a little time to get going. Never really felt like I was going at a great pace. Got passed a lot more than passing others. Didn't really bonk but also didn't feel too strong. Sprinted as much as I could to the finish. What would you do differently?: More running workouts. Not a natural runner and could use to lose another ten pounds. That would probably make me a bit faster! Post race
Warm down: Stand around and eat watermelon! What limited your ability to perform faster: Probably a few extra pounds I'm carrying plus more time for workouts! Should probably try to do some strength training as well. Event comments: Very well run race again this year. Might be fun if there were some entertainment/live music after the race. Woke up at in-laws in Sturgeon Bay and ate a bowl of cereal and a banana for breakfast. This year had to help get kids ready to come watch. Made it to Murphy Park sometime around 7:00 am. Picked up timing chip (somebody else had already taken my timing chip so I had to get issued a different number), aired up the bike tires and went over to transition area to set up. Hung with the wife and kids for a few minutes, put on wet suit, and went over to starting area at the beach
No pre-race warm up run or bike (running short on time) but I did get some swimming and biking in the day before. While waiting for my wave to start I did some swimming to get used to the 62 degree water. Overall I felt ready.
