Swim
Comments: This was a miserable swim. I started swimming a few months ago by joining a masters group and thought I had prepared adequately. But I found out right off that a pool loaded with people has far more waves then I had imagined. The entire time I found it very difficult to get a clean breath. I had projected a swim time of 5:00min, and was off by 45 sec due to that fact that it felt like I was drowning the entire time. By the time I got to the last 50, I had to stop at the wall for 10-15 sec before finishing... yea, it was that bad! When I got out of the pool I was trashed, and had swallowed enough water to feel nauseated. What would you do differently?: Take longer stokes and not take a the ability to get a clean breath for granted. I also don't see the need for a tri top for this sort of distance and might go shirtless next time. Transition 1
Comments: Considering the fact that the swim went so bad, this actually wasn't all that bad. I still managed to jog to the transition area and was starting to recover by the time I was jumping on the bike. What would you do differently?: Not die on the swim and run to the transition faster. Bike
Comments: I felt good on the bike, but wasn't able to get myself to drink or take a gu on the bike since my stomach was so unsettled. I kept my cadence up and passed quit a few people and only got passed by a couple. I was a little disappointed in my pace, according to my bike computer I was averaging in the high 21 mph range, but the race clock had me getting just under 20mph. What would you do differently?: Not suck on the swim, drink and take my gu Transition 2
Comments: I was coming to the dismount point right behind another competetor. I see him dismount and I do the same a few seconds later only to almost run him over because he comes to a complete stop directly in the middle of the narrow timing mat!!! we were both the almost run over by the guy coming in behind me. At this point the guy takes the hint and moves out of the way. What would you do differently?: Try and pass anyone directly in front of me so I won't have to worry about them stopping. Run
Comments: Talk about dieing on the run! I wanted to run under 25 minutes and was on pace to do that up until the last mile when I simple ran out of gas. Not drinking on the bike really hurt. What would you do differently?: Not suck on the swim and drink on the bike Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Aside from the swim really hurting, I was still slightly dehydrated from 2 days before. I was taking it easy 2 days before the race, so I decided to clean and polish the car in the garage. I had a fan and drank a lot of water when I was in the garage, but when I went and weighed myself at the end of the day ( I was out there ALL day) I had still managed to lose 7 pounds of water weight. I drank like crazy that night and the day before but was still a couple pounds short of where I should have been. Event comments: After the race I waited by the finish line to watch people come in as we all waited for the transition area to open up. When it was finally opened, I gathered my stuff and went home. I didn't think to say for the award ceremony since I was a little down about my swim and run, but it turned out I placed 3rd out of all the first timers! So I got to go pick up a nice little trophy from tri-on-the-run! It was much harder than I had expected, but I am looking forward to my next one in the beginning of august. This was my first tri, so my pre-race routine consisted of arriving early and just looking over the transition area.
I did a couple laps in the pool to feel out the difference between a 25 yard and 25 meter pool.
