Musselman Triathlon

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 20m 24s
Overall Rank = 81/568
Age Group = 20-24
Age Group Rank = 7/19
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 530, ate a piece of toast and a mango then got in the car for the hour drive. In the car I ate a cliff bar. Picked up my packet a little after 7 then headed to the park.
Event warmup:

Ran for a few minutes with some short sprints. Biked for a few minutes with some short sprints. I did not get a chance to get in the water because the meeting started then everyone was lined up to go to the start line. While there a swam a tiny bit but not a real warm up.
Swim
  • 09m 4s
  • 457 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was a complete train wreck. I was totally unprepared for the waves. I started near the front and ran out of energy trying to keep pace with the FOP, then started swallowing waves when my form crumbled. This caused me to slow way down and people started swimming over me. To keep from inhaling more water I had to flip onto my back. I never really recovered and did what I could until the water was about waist high when I started walking. Eventually the water was low enough to actually jog out and I was just happy to be out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Practice OWS! The one place I've been is a very calm lake, and only has a small sectioned off area for swimming. I'll have to find a different place to swim. And next time I need to pace, instead of sprinting the first 100-150m then blowing up.
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

This could've been better. I was moving kinda slow, still in shock from the swim probably. I wasted some time struggling with one of the socks.
What would you do differently?:

Not be in a daze coming out of the swim! And also, for my next sprint I think I'll ditch the socks.
Bike
  • 44m 31s
  • 15.2 miles
  • 20.49 mile/hr
Comments:

I crushed the bike. Not much else to say. One of my best rides ever probably. It took me about a mile to get up to pace, probably because of the swim still. After that it was good. Living in the mountains its hard for me to call them 'hills', but thats where I was really flying by people.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.. my first gel went down kinda rough, I think from all the water I swallowed swimming, so I skipped the planned 2nd one at the end of the ride. I'll have to think of a better nutrition plan because I think it hurt my run
Transition 2
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

For what I was planning on doing, this went well. I wasn't used to putting my bike on the rack so that took a few extra seconds.
What would you do differently?:

I have to practice the feet out of the shoes dismount. I don't know why I didn't already have that down pat. Seeing others do it I could only shake my head and wish I practiced it. Next time.
Run
  • 23m 35s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

I should've been much faster here. I've been around 7:30 in my practice bricks of similar bike/run length to this race. My stomach still felt weird even though I didn't eat the 2nd gel or finish my bottle of sports drink on the bike, but I just was going too slow in the first half. I got it together and had a good 3rd mile.
What would you do differently?:

HTFU. I can run faster and I should've in this race
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around with my friend. Stretched after I caught my breath and had some water and a piece of watermelon.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not being prepared for the swim and starting out at a slow pace on the run.

Event comments:

I had an absolute blast. I don't think I could've picked a better race for my first triathlon. I will definitely be back next year. Also, hanging around afterwards and watching the pros race in the ITU Pan America Cup was a nice finish to the day.
