Pre-race routine:

Get there early, listen to ipod and wait.
Got to listen to people's displeasure when they announced the water temperature was way too hot for wetsuits. I was glad I had mentally prepared for this, getting there and finding out with no warning would be a tough blow. Many unhappy campers before the race eve began.
Event warmup:

None.
Swim
  • 32m 9s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Deep water, nonwetsuit start. Very spread out in the beginning, little contact. I had a very tough time sighting, and didn't swim straight. Way too far to the outside of the direct lines to the buoys. Looked like the buoys were lying on their side and not standing upright, very hard to see. Never got in a good grove. Got a big whif of boat exhaust fumes and drank plenty of the local water. For whatever reason, my breathing wasn't so good either. 83 degree water is warm.
Near the end, I felt drafting for the first time. Cool, but the problem was that I kept swimming into the guy's feet. Something to try sooner next race.
What would you do differently?:

Be a little better prepared. Tough swim. I had never swam more than a 500 in the pool without a wetsuit before this. Even though I knew I could, having done it now is a good confidence boost for the future.
Transition 1
  • 03m 17s
Comments:

Good transition. Again used my watch, not the chip time. Went well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 30m 25s
  • 27 miles
  • 17.92 mile/hr
Comments:

Good course. That one uphill really killed waht was otherwise a really good pace for me. Felt good until the uphill, then I knew the agony that would await mo for the run.
What would you do differently?:

More biking. I told myself I was going to hold back on the bike and try to leave something more for the run, but once the race started, well, I got carried away.
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Good and fast. watch time again.
Run
  • 46m 40s
  • 5 miles
  • 09m 20s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs cramped again right away. Ran for the first mile, then tried to walk and stretch, but that hurt more than walking. Ran until it hurt, then walked until that hurt more than running.
Very hot, and I walked a lot more than I would have thought I would have needed to. 22:59 ot, 23:41 back in.
As always good to cheer on friends and fellow ATC members with club jerseys along the way
What would you do differently?:

More fluids on the bike.
This is the great mystery for me in races. My legs, especially the right one, cramp in the same place during the run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk to the fluids.
There were people with hoses hosing people off, which was welcome relief.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Leg fitness.

Event comments:

Not the best food at the end of the race variety wise. But very nice volunteers.
A local race through a lot of neighborhoods with some residents outside watching/cheering.
I love the local feel of races like this that get the community involved and don't just race through parks and deserted areas.

Went by my watch, not the chip time. Chip time included waiting for people to get out ahead of me (12) up some single file stairs onto the dock and walking (no running allowed) down the dock and then down a short path to the transition area where the mat was located.

Again used my watch time.
Wind: None
Course: Started flat, then rolling. About 6 miles in went down some big hills. 2 areas were specially marked as high caution areas. We were warned in the literature and in the prerace announcement. They had giant warnings chalked in the orad, with volunteers yelling and waiving prior to these 2 turns. Nevertheless, people were reckless. I thought several people who passed me were going way too fast for their own skill level. Not 5 mintes later I rolled up on the first big downhill warning turn, and 7 people were down in various stages of distress. One guy was laying in the road, face down, out cold. Scarry to see. I got up to 42 at one point and stayed aero down almost all the downhills. Hit something going about 40 that started what I can only describe as a death wobble, but my knees locked on the frame and it pulled itself out. Lost a little confidence there... Around mile 20 or 22 there was a long uphill climb at 7.5%. Seemed like it was a mile or so long, and that may not be to far off reality. It was a beast. Blew out my legs. Ouch. The rest was flat and fast, but my legs were tight from that long uphill.
