Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:45am. Bagel w/ peanut butter, banana, and coffee for breakfast.
Event warmup:

Limited due to time. Just enough time to get in and get wet.
Swim
  • 41m 10s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 57s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first open water swim. I felt like the water really beat me up and that I wasted too much energy in the water. The uphill run from the water to get to T1 was harsh. I was very pleased with my swim time.
What would you do differently?:

Waste less energy by staying more relaxed.
Transition 1
  • 05m 37s
Comments:

I took too much time in this transition. I need to drop 2-3 min off this transition. I kept thinking that I was forgetting something.
What would you do differently?:

Hurry up! Try to get this time around 2min 30sec.
Bike
  • 2h 58m 33s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.82 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt really good about this bike. I was very pleased with an 18.8 mph average and finishing under 3 hrs.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster!!
Transition 2
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

I think I could drop 1 min off my time.
What would you do differently?:

Hurry up!
Run
  • 2h 10m 42s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

This was definitely the hardest of the three events. I was hoping to run under 2 hrs. I had to take 3 or 4 more (1 min) walking breaks than I would have liked. I was not used to running as many rolling hills as this course offered. Thank heavens for enduralytes. I was pleasantly surprised that I had no stomach issues at all during the run.
What would you do differently?:

I would run more hills during my training.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate food and hung out with family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of experience with this distance and lack of running hills during training.

Event comments:

Awesome. This was a fantastic experience. I could not have asked for a better race for my first half tri.

Wind: Strong with gusts
Course: Out and back. It rained heavily a majority of the ride with some pretty heavy gusts of wind as well. I would have to say that I think I liked that more than the 92 degrees predicted for the entire day. The rain let up during the last 10 miles or so of the ride. I had to stop and pee at the halfway point. There were 2 people in line ahead of me so I had to wait about 4-5 minutes. I used this time to stretch my hamstrings and felt much better after this break.
