Swim
Comments: This was my first open water competition so I was pretty nervous. I stayed back and let others get in front of me. I stayed calm (suprisingly) and paced myself. I felt a bit of arm fatique about 1/2 way but it subsided and I finished strong. I got a few hits and tried hard to not let that frazzle me. I was frustrated by the breast strokers (sorry if I offend anyone!) as their legs and arms are much more of menace than front crawlers! What would you do differently?: I would get closer to the front so not behind so many slower swimmers. ( I underestimated my ability). I would push harder after 1/2 way mark. I paced myself which was good but had enough left so would push a bit harder next time. Run out of the water!! Transition 1
Comments: I lost my bike! I probably took 2 minutes looking and finding my bike! ARGH!!!!! Once I found it I was happy with my pace. I tried to stay calm so that I wouldn't forget anything. It worked. Slow but good and no errors! What would you do differently?: NOT FORGET WHERE I PUT MY BIKE! Everything else was good. Bike
Comments: I thought I did well but I have since realized that my "comfortable" race pace is too slow! I averaged between 23-30kms an hour (obviously faster on the hills!!). What would you do differently?: I would push a bit harder but would still take in the scenery as that made the bike more enjoyable. I think just an increase in my long ride training will help. As this was my first time I couldn't judge the distance so hard to push when I didn't know how far I still had to go! I also knew i had the run...I struggle with the run! Transition 2
Comments: This transition went much better. I was a bit slow as not to rush and do everything right, including double tying my shoes so that I wouldn't have to stop on the run. I also took a couple of seconds to drink some water and slosh on some sunscreen. What would you do differently?: Hmmm, not much, just try to do it a bit quicker. Run
Comments: I struggle with the run. A) I am not fit enough! B) My knees scream out when I run! I haven't run on the pavement in over a month so this was tough. I hadn't run 5km straight for a long time either so had no idea how to gauge my energy. (ie: Where to go slow and easy and when I could bump up the pace) . I still was able to finish and have a bit of energy to spare and although my knees were killing after are okay now (next day) What would you do differently?: Train harder (water running longer distances) Practice once a week the distance outside Post race
Warm down: I finished and immediately got some fluids (accelerade and water) and a banana. I then did some stretching on the grass and enjoyed the accolades from my friend who came to see me finish! I walked around, changed into dry clothes so as to not get chilled then more stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: I havent' been training hard enough! NO excuses. My equipment was fine just my body. Event comments: I can't really compare as this was my first time out but it was a great challenge and I am proud of myself for going all by myself with no structured training from a non athlete to a triathlete! The other triahletes are fabulous and so many people helped me with nerves, my number belt, my transition area! I was able to give and recieve a lot of encouragement! Great race! Being as though this was my first "real" race, I don't really have a routine except for the panic of what I have signed up to do! Seriously, I got up at 6am after not much sleep (waking up on the hour) then ate my usual breakfast (peanut butter and honey sandwich) and water. I headed out the door by 6:40 (a bit later than wanting to) and drove to the race. I packed my stuff and my bike about 10 minute walk from the parking lot which I guess was a bit of a warm up! I was late (to set up) and so there was hardly any room for my bike. The last one I did (little tri it distance) I was early and not near as many participants. I managed to shove in a space. I set up my gear but being by myself and being a newbie wasn't sure what to do with myself next! I had some wonderful people around me that sorted out my number belt (couldn't figure out how to work that for a bit!)and another woman who helped me get over to get body marked and get my timing chip (that was cool!) Then I got in line for a quick potty break as I knew that nerves would get the best of me! Glad I started that early as there was a long line.
It was cold and overcast pre swim and so was working on staying warm. Put on my wetsuit (a warm up and workout all on its own!) and then waited on the beach until the Olympic folks went. I swam about 100 metres back and forth to get my breathing slowed down. I felt pretty good.
