Pre-race routine:

First triathlon! The baby woke me up at 4:00 and I couldn't go back to sleep. Ate an English muffin with peanut butter, some coffee, and water. Took a granola bar to eat in the car. Walked the bike over to the race site from the parking lot. Started setting up transition. Looked around at my fellow competitors to see if I could pick up any tips for my first transition setup.
Event warmup:

None...just jumped into the baby pool right before time for me to swim. My swim start was not until after 8:00 so I had plenty of time to be nervous.
Swim
  • 07m 19s
  • 328 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Jumped in the water and did front crawl for the first length and a half, then alternated with side stroke. Swim is by far my worst event, but I'm way better than I was 3-4 months ago. I was passed by one person in my AG and even managed to pass someone myself. I was amazed at my time...I had estimated 9:00 and even clocked that in the pool two days prior.
What would you do differently?:

More pool time!
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

Ran slowly to transition, managing to keep my feet fairly clean. Put on socks, shoes (not clipless yet), sunglasses, helmet, and ate a gel followed by some water. I was starving at this point since I hadn't eaten anything since 5:30 or so. Ran with the bike...first time doing that. Need some practice.
What would you do differently?:

Clean things up. Practice running with bike. Not sure what took so long. I was surprised I was over 2 minutes. Maybe I could eat the gel on the bike next time.
Bike
  • 36m 42s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.62 mile/hr
Comments:

Mounting and getting into the cages is always challenging for me. Maybe someday I'll go clipless. Course was great - flat and fairly good quality roads. There was only one real slowdown - a 180 degree turnaround about halfway through. I passed many people including 3 in my AG, and was passed by nobody. Dismount was less than graceful since I had to pretty much come to a stop to get out of the cages.
What would you do differently?:

Not much...I only started cycling a few months ago so I was pretty excited about my performance. I guess going clipless might help.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

This was pretty easy. I ran with the bike, racked, off with the helmet and on with the hat and race belt. I actually stood there for a split second and thought, "Is that it?" before taking off for the run start.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 25m 12s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

Legs were pretty heavy for the first half mile or so. It was very hot. It seemed like forever before I got to the first aid station at mile 1. Took in some water. I passed 3 people in my AG (including the guy who passed me in the pool) and was passed by 1 person (not in my AG). Had water at mile 2 as well. I probably could have pushed it and gone below 24:00 but I walked through the aid stations and didn't want to bonk at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Probably better fueling. I think not eating anything besides a gel since 5:30 hurt.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank lots of powerade and water, walked around, tried 1/2 a piece of pizza and a little beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Maybe fueling? The heat?

Event comments:

Good race for a first timer. By the time I was finished, though, the preferred pizza varieties were gone, as were the beer cups and most of the beer. Guess I need to learn to swim faster.
