June Lake, California

High Sierra Triathlon Club
Total Time = 8h 00m
Overall Rank = 97/125
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 11/14
Pre-race routine:

Drank 3 small Naked Juice, 1 medium orange juice. 1 packet of Sports Beans and took one Vivarin about 30 minutes to race time.
Event warmup:

None really. Slowly jogged for about 5 minutes then swam for about 5 minutes. This is an area I really need to work on.
Swim
  • 38h 25m
  • 1640 yards
  • 2h 20m 31s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very bad performance and I was disappointed afterwards. I used the breast stroke for the vast majority of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Wearing a wetsuit for the first time during your first race is not a good idea. I needed to do numerous training swims ahead of time to get used to the change in stroke. Shame on me.
Transition 1
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

Put socks and shoes on first, had trouble getting into the peddles. Took another Vivarin before getting on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

More urgency in the transition area. Need water pans to rinse feet of gravel and sand.
Bike
  • 1h 40m 53s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 14.78 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt strong in flats and downhill, used aerobars as I should. Climbing absolutely sucked. The last 6 - 8 miles was pure torture.
What would you do differently?:

Tempo training and climbing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

Not too bad for my first tri. The gear racks were thrashed and overcrowded. Need to expect that in the future. Being tired kept me from transitioning smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

Shoes off while still riding, etc. Repetitions.
Run
  • 1h 25m 18s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 13m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Extremely difficult - even more so than I anticpated. Bridgeport doesn't even compare. I had bad lower back tightness coming off the bike and the hills only made it worse.
What would you do differently?:

Hill work. Hill Work. Hill work.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk it off!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of appropriate training and altitude.

Event comments:

Beautiful course and I will do it annually to chart training improvement. This is a "gut check" course and oriented towards experienced athletes - which I am not.
