Swim
Comments: Good first 200, swam hard, but I'm still going super slow compared to my pool times. It's really aggravating. Gotta work on my speed a little. My breathing was good, and when I felt a little out of breath, I switched from bilateral to breathing on my right side. Navigation for once was spot on, though my boyfriend commented that when he saw me, he thought I came out of the water much more than others to sight. So I'll work on that, too. What would you do differently?: Work on my sighting so I can stay lower in the water. Work on my interval training so I can bring my speed up. Transition 1
Comments: Recently had my left shoe adjusted because I was having issues with my calf muscles. The clip is turned out a little more, and I haven't gotten used to it enough that clipping in with the left foot is automatic. So that took a couple extra agonizing seconds. What would you do differently?: Maybe practice clipping in, but I think that'll come again with how often I ride. Just gotta get used to the left clip. I think I'm also considering trying the attach-shoes-to-bike trick, but maybe I'll wait until I get a trainer... Bike
Comments: I got a flat five minutes into the ride. Argh! It took 13 minutes to change it and get back up on the road, which was incredibly frustrating. This means that I did a totally unintentional negative split on the back. Haha! What would you do differently?: Nada, I think I performed well on the bike despite the flat setback. I tried to keep my cadence relatively high and really took on the hills with gusto. I don't think I could have asked for more of myself. For once, I'm satisfied with my bike performance. If only I hadn't flatted!!! Transition 2
Comments: Was super speedy getting off the bike and running into transition, but forgot my race belt because I had put it under the plastic bag with my shoes in it (for rain protection) and didn't see it! The volunteer in the TA yelled at me as I ran by "where's your race number?!" "Shoot!" I said and ran back, grabbed it and clipped it on on my way to the run out. I don't think it took more than :05 but again, a silly mistake that sort of hurts more mentally than physically. What would you do differently?: Put my race belt on TOP of my shoes? Run
Comments: Usually pass a lot of people on the run, because I like to pick 'em off. I always say this and it's true: slow on the swim and the bike, but running is my sport. I'm still slow compared to many many other triathletes, but it is my fastest sport and I get a thrill out of passing people. However, with the hills, this one was tougher than usual. I pushed as hard as I could, but man, those hills HURT. What would you do differently?: Nothing, I pushed as hard as I could with what I had and I'm pretty satisfied with my pace. Post race
Warm down: Stretched, but it started raining cats and dogs as soon as I crossed the finish line and all I wanted was pizza and a change of dry clothes. Also, I got second place in my age group (number one got bumped because she placed overall, so I got moved up to second!!). Event comments: Good race, well organized. Post race activities weren't super great, but Hurricane Hanna may have been the reason for that. Good food during and after race. The transition area had neat wooden boxes instead of standard racks and I think that contributed to more space for each participant. The course was good, the lake is pristine. Got there in plenty of time, since it was a later-ish start than most tri's. Had a banana and English muffin with jam in the car. Made my way over to the transition area and got set up. They had nifty lookin' "racks" that were actually wooden boxes with a slot for the bike wheel. Kept things mighty organized. I covered everything I could in plastic in case it rained and then headed over to the water to watch the Half swim and cheer people on.
After HIM's were outta the water, I went in for a quick warmup. The water was great and I felt good going out a little, got rid of the jitters.
