Swim
Comments: Overall a decent swim for me. I was surprised that my time was so slow. I guess that they added the time for the run to transition, but even so I was a little disappointed. Anyone else feel their swim time was a little longer than a normal 1500m swim? What would you do differently?: Swim faster. But mentally this was a good swim for me. I felt confident the whole way. Transition 1
Comments: A good transition. I had my shoes on my bike and even though I forgot the rubber bands I just lifted the back wheel as I ran out of transition. What would you do differently?: Remember the rubber bands for the shoes on the bike. Bike
Comments: I had a good bike leg. I was pleased with it. What would you do differently?: Push a little harder at the beginning. Transition 2
Comments: The signage that they had approaching transition was great. I had plenty of time to get out of my shoes and prepare for the dismount. I was a little slow with the socks and the shoes, I will do a 5k without socks but a 10k is a too long for me to go sockless. I had a good dismount and overall a good T2. What would you do differently?: Keep practicing. I can always get better. Run
Comments: I started off with a sub 8 min pace for the first 3 miles. around mile 3 or 4 having to bail out of the porta john line at the beginning of the finally caught up to me, my kidneys were screaming! I ducked behind some buses near the golf course to pee. I don't think I have ever gone that long....it seemed like hours!! Feeling much better I took off to finish my run. I felt like my pace was as strong as the first 3 if not faster, but the overall time says differently. I guess the pit stop was long :( oh well it was that or loose control of my bodily functions as I crossed the finish line. What would you do differently?: Not stop during the run for a bathroom break. Post race
Warm down: Drank, slowly ate a banana, signed up for a massage and walked back to transition to get my stuff. Got my bike and back to the finish festival just as my number came up for massage. Had the active release therapy done by Paul at the massage tent which hurt like hell but was amazing as I had absolutely no soreness on Monday! I didn't even feel like I raced the next day. I felt so good that I was able to do my long run (an 18 miler) on Tuesday. So either I left a lot on the table during the race (which I sure didn't feel like after crossing the finish line) or the Active Release Technique does really work! Event comments: I love the new course. The transition area and signs are great. Event very well run. Just get more Porta Johns! There should never be a 30 minute+ line for that, you know you have 3,000 athletes that have been hydrating for the past few days they are going to need to use the bathroom. Woke up at 4:30, got showered packed gear, went downstairs and grabbed the cab that was sitting outside the hotel. Got about 4 blocks and realized that I left my wetsuit hanging in the closet in my room! Turned around and went back, paid $5 for a trip around a couple of blocks.
Got to race site a little later than I wanted to, but no worries, I already had my bike racked. The bikes on either side had set up their gear on the wrong side of the rack, leaving me no place to put mine. I didn't want to set up on the other side as I could be subject to a penalty, so I asked an official how to handle it. He said he couldn't move their stuff but I could. I told him I wasn't comfortable moving someones stuff, so I would wait and hope that they showed back up. He offered to give them a penalty, I told him I didn't want them to get a penalty, just wanted to set up my stuff! After he left, I decided to check my tires, that I had filled up yesterday before riding to the race site from the hotel. My front tire was FLAT! Normally not a worry, as I still had time to change it, but there was a small problem. I didn't have a tube. When I left home in a rush yesterday, I left my bike bag on my road bike in the garage. The mechanic tent did not have any tubes left. Basically at that point my race was over. I grabbed some money out of my bag and started walking up and down the aisles asking if anyone had an extra tube that they would sell. In just a few minutes I found someone that pulled a spare tube out of their bag. At first he didn't want any money, but I insisted on paying him. People like that are what makes this sport so awesome! Thank you and I hope that the good karma carried you through to a PR that day you deserve it!
I got my tire fixed, one of the guys showed up next to me and I told him about his mistake in setting up, got my stuff set up and grabbed wetsuit and goggles and headed to the swim corral. I stood in line in the unbelievably long porta john line which didnt seem to move. As I finally got about 3/4 of the way up they were calling my swim wave. Oh well I guess I would have to wait.
