Swim
Comments: Tried to push through the main pack a little at first but still did not escape quite a bit of leg pulling. After that, I tried to relax and maintain a steady stroke. That worked pretty well but had a problem with my right goggle filling up slowly with water. Coming back I had to swing wide and quite a ways from the buoys to avoid the other waves. What would you do differently?: I could have pushed it a little harder but wanted to relax as much as possible since this was my first time in an olympic distance. Transition 1
Comments: time is a little misleading as it was a long run out of the water and through the transition area. Didn't have a problem with the wetsuit and I was pleased since it was the first time for me. Took a little extra time to transfer the garmin to the bike. Bike
Comments: Well, I knew this would be the slowest leg for me but I wanted to maintain a relatively high cadence and try to save some energy for the run and I think I did that. course was a little congested at places especially when the sprint distance competitors hit the course. I knew that I would get passed by the solid bikers so it was not a big deal and I stuck to my plan. I was very happy with the average speed so I think I am moving in the right direction. What would you do differently?: just train more which I plan to do before next year. It was hard to get in the longer rides the past couple of months with the new born but I have plenty of time to improve this discipline over the off season. Transition 2
Comments: I didn't have a smooth transition and I knew it would be on the slow side since I decided to transfer the garmin to my wrist and put on socks for the run. I had problems with the socks which was frustrating but I knew I would need them for the 10K What would you do differently?: I will probably not use the garmin next time but wanted to use it today since it was my first olympic and a learning experience for me. Run
Comments: Pretty happy with the run overall. I think I could improve a bit here but I had a plan that I was trying to stick to with the new distance. I wanted to keep the first lap close to an 8 minute mile and then push it from there depending on how I felt. I obviously pushed it a little harder than that as I was feeling pretty good. The volunteers were great and there were plenty of aid stations to keep you cooled down. That helped and I finished hard but still was tired enough to feel good about the run. What would you do differently?: I was pleased. Post race
Warm down: cooled down and had quite a bit of water and some fruit and cookies. tried the pizza but it did not sit well so I made my way to the beer tent for a cold one. Very nice! What limited your ability to perform faster: I told myself before the race that I would have been very happy with a time of 2 hours and 30 minutes and I beat that by more than 5 minutes so I was very pleased. It was my first attempt at this distance and feel that I accomplished my goals and will improve on the next one. Woke up at 3:45 and had a cup of coffee and a bagel with peanut butter. Watched a little CNN and loaded up the car and headed out around 4:45. Went to body marking and then on to the transition area to set up and inflate the tires since the check in was on sunday. Was a little odd setting up in the dark.
Not much but some light stretching.
