Swim
Comments: The swim was good but I was surprised to see that they didn't have more boats and kyaks considering the huge amount of people in the water. I still don't swim correctly. Until I can consistantly swim with correct technique I will have poor times. What would you do differently?: I needed to swim with proper techinque. I need to improve my endurance in the water so I can maintain the speed I had for the first 100m for the whole race. Transition 1
Comments: I really attempted to save some time in this transition. I ran hard out of the water and tried to save time. I chose not to put on socks because that simply takes me too long. I slipped into my shoes and then took off toward the exit. I fastened my shoes on the road. What would you do differently?: I will try to fasten my shoes to my bike and do the running jump onto the bike next time. I didn't quite have it down to used it this time. Bike
Comments: There were no real differcult hills but still I was slowed by the hills. I didn't ride very well. I don't think I prepared for this race very well. My diet was not so good late in the week and I had to rest most of the week nursing some knee swelling from a long ride and run last weekend. I just didn't feel 100%. I mixed my water half and half with Gatorade. That seemed to give me some needed boost. I ate a package of Clif Shot Blocks. What would you do differently?: I would use healthy eating habits right up to the race day. I will take in nutrition sooner in the race. I need to spend more time on the bike training. I need to have a better sustained pace. Transition 2
Comments: I just happened to pull into the transition at the same time as several other riders. The two people that were in front of me wanted to walk. The way the transition was layed out I couldn't manuver around them. That slowed me slightly. I had a little indecision about whether to wear socks or not. I chose not to. What would you do differently?: I would try to ride with my feet out and on top of my shoes so I could do a faster dismount and run to my shoes. I attempted to do that this time but there was a couple turns right before the transition and I didn't get it done. I am going to get some Yankz for the next race. That might have saved me a few seconds. Run
Comments: I felt somewhat stiff for the first mile or so. I allowed myself to run pretty slow. My head just wasn't in the game. I didn't feel to happy about my bike so I let those thoughts flow right into my run. Just after half way through the run I relaxed and increased the pace. Once I relaxed I felt much better but the damage was already done. I ran too slow for the first part. As I neared the finish I was passing quite a few people and trying to improve my time. Just as I turned the last turn there was a 50 yard staight away to the finish. The last guy that I passed at the turn was next to me and he started yelling at me "Come on! Come on!" He wanted to sprint/race the last 50 yards. So this guy and I sprinted. I toasted him. 50 yards is the right distance for me. Not 3 miles. After it was hilarious. I high fived the guy and we had a good laugh. What would you do differently?: I would run make an effort to run "loose" the entire time. I just ran rather stiff at first and that really slowed me down. Post race
Warm down: I walked around for a bit. What limited your ability to perform faster: Poor diet early in the week. Nursing a some knee swelling cause me to stop training for a couple days this week. I didn't feel great on the bike and that poor attitude carried over into the first part of the run. Event comments: They really need to triple the amount of restrooms. They have 1300 people with 200-300 spectators and there were only 9-12 restrooms. The lines for the bathrooms were very, very bad. They needed more volunteers. I arrived early but was in line at the packet pickup when the race waves were starting. I and 100 other people almost didn't get let into transition because the race had already started. That part was very upsetting especially since I got there plenty early. Not to mention that they didn't have a race T-shirt for me. Last updated: 2008-07-28 12:00 AM
