Swim
Comments: My swim training consisted of a week in the pool while on vacation - swimming no more than 8 minutes straight in a 10 yard long pool. The week prior to the race I went to the school pool and swam twice - for about 20 minutes each time. I never went more than 100 meters without stopping. Thank goodness that someone who did the race before said that the current would help and that you could stand on the bottom - which I did quite a bit. :-) What would you do differently?: What would I do differently? Swim. Actually, I thought that I did pretty darn well for the LACK of swim training that I did. I will be ready for the next race. Transition 1
Comments: Before the race even started, I said to myself that I was going to do things nice and slow/very methodically. I knew that I wasn't going to break any records, so I didn't want to make any mistakes in the transition area. I had everything laid out the way I wanted to put it on so that worked out nicely. I even had somethimg to eat (banana). What would you do differently?: Next time, I would move a lot faster in the transition area. Like I said, this was my first time so I did take my time. Next time, I know what to expect. I would also move faster from the swim to my transition area AND I would move faster with my bike out of the transition and get on my bike a lot sooner. Again, it's just a matter of getting the first one out of the way. Bike
Comments: A lot different than riding a trainer. I started out slowly, did it slowly, and ended slowly. I kept thinking that I didn't want to overdo it where I was at the point of not having enough left for the run. Also, my lower back was killing me that that had an impact on my riding as well. I passed a few people and people passed me. This was my first ever ride on my new bike so in that respect I did pretty well. What would you do differently?: I would definitely put in a lot more miles prior to the race. I would also push myself a little more. I had more than I thought left in me. Transition 2
Comments: Not too bad. Again, after I went over the timing mat, I walked to my transition area with the bike. I could have walked a little faster. As with the T1, I stopped and had another part of a banana. I already had my running shoes on so that was good. What would you do differently?: I would just speed it up a bit. Run
Comments: As noted in my ranks, I really came back in the run. This was definitely my strong portion. Of course, this is where I put in most of my training; relatively speaking. I really had a lot more energy than I thought that I would. My legs were surprisingly alright after just coming off the bike. I passed quite a few people. I was still taking it easy just as I did for most of the race. What would you do differently?: I would have pushed myself in the final stretch. I had a lot left in me that I could have shaved some time off my overall time. Oh well. It was fun! Post race
Warm down: Walked around looking for Heidi. What limited your ability to perform faster: I was a little apprehensive about the whole thing in general; starting from never being in a transition area before, to starting the race, swimming, you name it. Because of all that, I took it a little easy. I had two goals: 1. To finish the race 2. To finish in less than 1:45 I accomplished both goals! I AM A TRIATHLETE! Event comments: This was a great race for my first race. I will be doing other triathlons. Actually for this one, Heidi and I are going to do it as a team. I will do the swim and run, she will do the bike. Last updated: 2008-07-28 12:00 AM

Since this was my first race EVER, I had no routine other than making sure that I didn't forget anything. My entourage (Heidi) and I woke up at 3:30 so that we could get ready and be there by 6:00. I had no idea what was in store for me, so I wanted to get there early enough. Turns out that that was a perfect time to get there.
When we got to the island, there were people there. Some were jogging and some were riding their bikes. My event warm up consisted of getting the transition area in order and walking to the other end of the island for the start of the swim. We got a nice area in the transition area - right up against the parking garage. I didn't care if I was near the entrance to the transition area or not or whether or not I was at the end of the row of bikes. I just wanted to be out of other people's way and I found that perfect spot.
