Swim
Comments: My wave had about 60 people in it, so the barge was crowded at the start...PC group was the wave to start before us...jumped i nthe water and could immediately feel the current pulling me away from the barge. Had to latch on to the rope at the start to keep from being pulled out into the course. The beginning of the start was completely overwhelming, especially for a first timer. I tried to wait a couple seconds to let the serious swimmers go past, but my pacng was all off and I could tell my heart was racing. Another pr race plan was to stick to the inner side of the course, but 5 minutes i realize I'm right smack in the middle surrounded by people. It takes me about 400 meters to calm myself and start working on a good cadence. When I felt people behind me i would slow to let them pass. At around the halfway mark I got stung by a jelleyfish in the right shoulder, and could immediately feel burning on my right side. I got concerned and started treading water just to make sure I was gonna be ok. One of the friends i was doing the race with was behind me when i got stung. Not only did he get stung as well, but his chip fell off his leg...we were both off to a great start. Although I was hurting, the sting angered me and forced me to swim more aggressively. I finished the swim very strong, and was overjoyed to get out of the water. What would you do differently?: take my time at the start...control my breathing Transition 1
Comments: Long distance between swim out and T1...I walked the first half just to relax my leg muscles...once i hit the showers they had stationed I jogged back into T1. I was in transition red, so the distance from swim out was much shorter. took about 5 minutes to get my gear, eat a gu, and walk my bike out of T1 Bike
Comments: My main concern was navigating my bike along with all the others along the first part of the course which was very technical and steep...Luckily I had no problems clipping in and was able to clear the hill and make it onto the highway with no problem...Hydration was my main downfall for this portion. I accidentally kicked off one of my bike bottles at the very beggining, and had to rely on one for the entire bike portion. This ended up being a huge disaster, as my legs and stomach began cramping towards the later stages of the bike. So desperate for water I stopped to drink from a bike bottle that was left on the median of the course! I was definitely dogging it, but received so much encouragement from the other competitors.I stopped to stretch at the turn around in the bronx and someone stopped and offered to help stretch me out...I couldn't believe it! Finally dragged my fat but back into transition and got ready for the run. Transition 2
Comments: T2 was all about rehydrating and stretching...I took my time because I knew if I tried to hurry I would start cramping immediately...they had an aid station right after T2 so i drank 2 accelerades and 2 waters. Run
Comments: I decided to walk the first mile into the park...it was close to mid day at that point and walking down 75th I could see the ground sizzle ahead of me...other competitors decided to walk and some were really struggling...some in much better shape than me. I took advantage of every aid station along the course and filled up with then warm accelerade and water. jogged every half mile but could definitely feel my legs starting to lock up...Passed ambulances (Which my family thought I was in) but I knew I was finishing the race...Again received a lot of encouragement from competitors that had already finished, telling me how much mor I had to go. The finish chute seemed like a mile in itself, and when I finally crossed the finish line I went straight into the aid tent to get the cramping taken care of. What would you do differently?: TRAIN MORE!!!! Post race
Warm down: Massage, water and gatorade, bagels and bananas. I was so hungry after the race. What limited your ability to perform faster: My weight? lol Event comments: Great race despite the weather and jelleyfish...with more training I know I can perform much better for next year! All the volunteers and people were great! Woke up aroun 3:30...was staying in NJ about 30 min away from the city. Showered, ate cereal with bananna and drank water...got to the transistion area around 5 because we werent able to find parking. Set up transition area and began the trek to the swim start. My wave started at 7:03, so had time to stretch and mentally prep for my first tri ever!
the walk to the swim start was more than enough... also did some light stretching.
