Swim
Comments: The race directors said that the course was shortended by a bit due to the bad weather. Something about the lifeguards or coastguard and safety. No worries though, as I more than made up for any course shortening by losing sight of the last buoys and swimming half way to Ontario. The water was rough. Waves were large. This is what I was dreading. I knew I could do the distance in calm water. Much less sure in waves. I made it out without drowning, so I can check that goal off of my list. Overall, it was OK except for going well off course. It is hard to breathe in waves. What would you do differently?: Not get lost. I made it out alive, so I'm thrilled about that. Didn't even finish last in age group. Happy about that as well, especially considering I trained by swimming laps in my 30x15 pool. Transition 1
Comments: I was very tired after the swim, and went pretty slow here. I took a good bit of time washing sand off of my feet and putting on socks. What would you do differently?: Maybe practice more. It was slow, but I think that had most to do with the swim. Bike
Comments: I should have trained the bike more, with some faster pace work. My legs were burning after about a mile. That didn't stop. I kept up a good pace, but my legs simply prevented going faster. I passed a couple of people, got passed by many more. Looking back, I think I could maybe have pushed it a little harder here without affecting the run, but not much. It started raining pretty hard at one point. What would you do differently?: Train more. Lower bars on bike. Transition 2
Comments: Rack bike, take off helmet, grab hat. Run. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Well, run was pretty good. I think I could have pushed it a bit more. Limiting part would have been my legs, not my lungs. I got behind a guy that was 48 and basically just stayed there. We passed several people, got passed by several. I was really just a nice easy run. Probably the easiest I've done in a month or so. I normally train on a track, which is very boring, but I always know exactly where I am in terms of distance. Not having that info I think prevented me from going harder. What would you do differently?: Run faster. Post race
Warm down: Light streching. What limited your ability to perform faster: Being sick, maybe. Lack of training on the bike. Huge waves and getting lost on the swim. Not running as fast as I could have. Event comments: Perfect first race, for me at least. The swim was tough. Presque Isle is one of my favorite places, period. I'm glad I did my first tri there, even if it was typical dreary Erie weather. Last updated: 2008-08-01 12:00 AM

Get a cold, including a sore throat, on the Wednesday before the race. That was and is quite irksome.
Well, after a summer of virtually no rain, it starts raining about the time we hit the Geneva/Cochranton exit on I-79. It doesn't stop raining until after the race. And the wife and I decided to make the Presque Isle Tri part of a camping trip.
So, we get to the campground south of Erie, and check in, but then it starts thunderstroming. I get soaked. So we postpone setting up the tent and drive up to pick up the race packet. We do eventually find a lull in the rain and get the tent set up.
It rained all night. I woke up several times, but overall, not too bad. Got up at 5:45 and got to the race around 7.
Tried, and failed, to stay warm.
