Pre-race routine:

Woke up just after 3am, had coffee, took a quick shower and ate a bagel. On my way out I grabbed another 1/2 bagel. Drove the 80miles to the venue. Arrived in total darkness, put bike, bag and wetsuit in transition.

I had to wait for it to get light to setup and use bathrooms.
Event warmup:

Swam maybe 25y late. Supposed to start at 7am, but the fog was so bad they delayed it 30min. Still real bad when we went in. I waited until the last minute to put my wetsuit on because it was cold. Once I got it on I was still cold and actually like most people there put clothes back on over it.

  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

My swim was good. The fog was peasoup. It was real thick and was even thicker the 2nd loop. They took out a ton of algae plants, but there was still a ton. Your arms definitely got slowed in them. There were entire groups, not just individuals that were off course. I swam alone for awhile and would look back hoping someone was back there. I got off course a few times.

Very hard to see the buoys until you were very close. I had a great swim so I can not really complain.

Tons of life guards and police boat w/diver. Really as you got close to the turn around you looked for the police boat with its lights.
What would you do differently?:

Swim at least once in a fresh water body of water.
Transition 1
  • 01m 26s
Comments:

I took a bit of extra time, I toweled off very quickly because it was cold, and somehow popped a lens out of my sun glasses, ended up not needing them. I found the lens when I was packing up, put it away and then lost it by the time I got home.

14th fastest T1

What would you do differently?:

Put on another layer of clothing
Bike
  • 3h 32m 1s

Comments:

It was brutal. It was very cold. As a result of being so cold I did not consume enough electrolytes/sodium and my quads seized at mile 33, 4x, and 51, two other times they almost seized, but I was right at the top of a hill and was able to peddle out. I tried to make up for lost calories, just couldn't do it. I had to stop and stretch, I definitely lost time. I always caught back up and people were very surprised when I would. I rode alone most of the ride.

I have never experienced really any sort of cramping let alone having your muscles seize up. It hurt, once it happened I was in pain the rest of the race. My neck and back were also very tight for the first 30miles or so while it was still cold.

Some people could not maintain momentum and fell, one guy I talked to showed me his shattered cleat at the end of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Ride the course ahead of time. Take a few of the descents faster. Some of them were super fast. Ride more hills? HTFU?
Transition 2
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

The guy next to me, had left his crap everywhere and his bike had fallen over on to my stuff. I asked a volunteer to rerack it. I went with my Newtons and put socks on which took no time, and then laced the shoes.

38th fastest T2
What would you do differently?:

Maybe run with my PI Streak?
Run
  • 2h 08m 14s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Decent enough run given that my quads were still in pain, I stretched numerous times, walked a few hills. They were just in real pain.
What would you do differently?:

HTFU? The only thing that held me back were my quads, I had a real low Avg HR (for me), I was never tired, I just could not push.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate almost a slice of pizza, 1 cookie, 1 orange, 1 can of coke and some water. I am never real hungry after races.

10-15min massage for my lower back that had been bothering me.

Then some ART.

On the way home I ate a Burger King Angus Steakhouse Burger and a Spicy Chicken Wrap.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My quads. I think I lost 25min give or take as a result of them.

Event comments:

The only real improvement would be to better control the run course. Bike course was fine, no real drafting because of the hills, maybe order the pizza later, it was cold and dry. The massage was AWESOME, ART was good.

Placing is weird, 43/83 but there were 8 or so AquaBikers, about 20+ that DNF and a ton of relays. Overall I enjoyed it.

My lower back feels AWESOME today on Monday, definitely as a result of the massage.

Course: Out and back x2. It would have been great aside from the fog. I think we swam into the algae plants because of the fog. The volunteers took a ton of it out.

Wind: Little
Course: Brutal. Wicked hills. It was a bit rough in just a few small areas. If last year was truly harder than this, it must have been hard to finished. There was one hill that is right after a 90degree turn, you have no momentum to go up it. Almost 2000ft more elevation gain than in Lake Placid in half the distance.
