Swim
Comments: Didn't feel great on the swim. Nothing specific, just not very fast. For a while in the middle there was no one around me which made me wonder if I was execptionally slow. My contact also got messed up in eye which distracted me and made it hard to see. After the turn around the last buoy it was difficult to see the swim finish so I just followed the people near me, especially the fast guys from the wave behind. Didn't get kicked too much which is always nice. Thanks to some helpful advice from a man I met before the swim, I saved some time swimming through the water even after touching weeds (which were abundant) while other people waded through very deep water. What would you do differently?: Not really sure. This may be as good as I get during the swim. I will try warming up at some point which may help. Transition 1
Comments: Felt slow on this one. Ran with my bike shoes up what seemed like a long, grassy hill. That made it more difficult. Also stopped to tighted the shoes since they seemed loose. May not have been worth it. What would you do differently?: Figure out a more efficient way to do things. Work on running in my bike shoes Bike
Comments: Not a great bike leg for me. Definitely was not ready for the hills. Sure it was fun going down (hit over 30 at one point), but some of the ups were painful. Got passed by pretty much everyone in the 40-50 age group. I did manage to pass more people this time. I also felt at some points I may not have been pushing as hard as I could have. Need to work on my focus more. It was only a 5k run, not sure what I was saving myself for. Did pretty well on the turning/cornering which I haven't alwyas been comfortable with. Felt good on the bike. I think my blood sugar dropped at some point and it may be worth it for me to take a gu on the bike even in a short race. What would you do differently?: More time on the bike. More practice on hills (if I can find them). Take a gu on the bike. GO FASTER!! and keep my focus. Transition 2
Comments: well the dismount was at the top of this hill and then you had to jump off quickly. Then run with the bike down the aforementioned grassy hill that we ran up in T1. Apparently it is harder to run downhill in bike shoes than up. I felt ridiculous tottering my way down in my shoes. Felt like I took awhile in this transition too. Forgot to take puff off of inhaler which I thought about for the entire run. What would you do differently?: Practice that leaving shoes on bike thing. Get elastic laces (also, as will be discussed, because shoes come untied). Put inhaler on top of running shoes so it won't be forgotten. Run
Comments: Not a great run. Very tight going up the first hill, but loosened up nicely about .5 miles in. Passed a number of people. Spent most of the run worried about not having done my inhaler. Don't think it actually affected my physically, but sure was distracting. Each shoe came untied once and I lost at least 30 seconds there. Had water coming out of transition which was good. Took another water about half way; bad idea. Didn't need it for that short of a run and it messed up my pacing and breathing. Ended up full on sprinting the last 100 yards or so and passed a guy at the end. Felt like I left stuff of the table. What would you do differently?: Elastic laces. Make sure to use inhaler. Push myself. It's a short run. I guess I was just worried about the breathing thing snd running out of steam too early. I could easily done sub-26 and should probably have been around a sub-25. Post race
Warm down: Got water, walked around. Changed out of wet shorts. Found Emma's camera and tried to take pictures of her as she ran by, but forgot to put the battery in. Ate a banana and two oreos. What limited your ability to perform faster: Too distracted by both internal and external factors. Need to get over my fear of pushing too much too early. Event comments: The race was very well organized. My only compaint is that for the post race food they had fruit, oreos, and pizza. By the time I got over to have pizza (after putting stuff away and chatting with people), they only had meat pizza left, not so great for a vegetarian like myself. Was starving by the time I left. Greatest moment of the day: while looking at the posted times, some guy asked if I was the top female finisher. I told him know, but thanked hum profusely for thinking I could be. He then told me I looked like her. I guess the training really is paying off...spent a large portion of remainder of the day telling this story and flexing (sad, but true)... Woke up and got ready; ate a peanut butter and honey sandwich. Managed not to get it all over me which is a vast improvement over last race. Had to pick up packet (we arrived ten minutes late the day before due to traffic); stressed about my back tire which went flat again. Had the bike tune-up guy help me changed it because I was stressed and figured it be easier to do with a stand; Had gu 15 min before start
Waded in the water. That's about it
