Pre-race routine:

For most 5ks I start getting nervous a couple days before the race. This time... nothing. I slept like a rock. I woke up right at 7. Ate my egg white omlette and did my ritual poop. I was out the door and off to Stratford. I arrived at race site, registered, sat in my car, put my racing flats on, and walked over to where people were gathering.
Event warmup:

Event warm up... I did a quick jog around the parking lot. I then commenced in another pre race ritual... people watching. You always get a good variety at your local 5k, especially when there are 500+ in attendance. Some of my favorites include the following. Guy who wears a large t shirt and tucks it into his running shorts so it looks like he's wearing a diaper. Guy stuck in the seventies sporting tie die, knee socks, and headband. First timers who are positive they are going to win this little non-olympic event. They call the start and I begin walking with the masses to the line.

Comments:

I make my way to the front of the gargantuan pack that has already assembled at the line. I park my booty 2 deep from the superstars in the front. Moses takes his place in front of me. He must be 70. I want to ask him... Really? You are really going to stand right in front of me. Doesn't it say somewhere on those large stone tablets that you are NOT suppose to go to the front of the pack at a 5k. I hope he has insurance for that hip replacement he's going to need after I push his ass out of the way. Everyone is jittery. I just stand there, arms folded.

This is the opening day for cross country. There are four teams in attendance. They are all talking shit. I laugh a little, kind of sad I never ran in high school... or ever for that matter. Course director speech... yadi yadi yadda. Ready, get set, GO.

I go. I give Moses a break and just run around him and the rest of team Jesus. I immediately run passed the four cross country teams and right to the front. Really? Where are all the superstar frontliners? That nike pro apparell didn't cut it I guess. I get behind a kid who is looking like he is running my kind of pace for now and I get right behind him. Mile 1 comes fast. 5:10. Not bad. I was hoping for more like 5 flat but I had a slow start so I'll take it. I still feel good. I pass my kid at mile 1 and soon his breathing behind me dissappears. I can see the lead 3 about 10 yards in front of me. Well, thats where I'm going.

We take a right onto another street and I turn on whatever it is I have. I catch the third place kid and get behind him. I stay there until about mile 2. He looks like he is starting to fade so I make my move and run next to him. This must have turned on whatever he had because he took off 10 feet in front of me. It stayed like this to the end. We made the final turn back into the park and I looked behind me. No one was catching me. I wasn't catching cross country ahead of me either. I cross the finish line, 16:46, behind 3 high-schoolers and in 4th. I get a red bull from the red bull chicks and collect my stuff.
What would you do differently?:

I could have caught # 3. I just didn't, I don't know why. I can go faster.
Post race
Warm down:

red bull, sweating

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My parents would say it's because I am not married yet ;)...

Event comments:

I would do this again
