Pre-race routine:

got up and drove to the event myself. had some of a clif builder bar on the drive over and some clif drink. didn't have much of an appetite. i never really do in the morning of a race. maybe cos it is so early?
Event warmup:

stretched a bit. waded in the water. didn't swim cos i didn't want to stand outside getting cold even tho it was warm enough...

Comments:

just figured out that i was 2nd out of the water in my age group!! nice!! last year i think i was 5th based on my own guess - no splits last year. i laugh at how i'm "so fast" in my AG in this race. and yet i lose it on the bike and run. oh well. i didn't even push myself super hard on this swim, i was comfortable for the most part. and i still got the 2nd fastest time...the person with the fastest time finished 25 seconds before me.

EDIT! I didn't realize when i sorted the info, there were two swimmers that swam in under 9 min...so, i was 4th fastest, not 2nd. hey, still not bad!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

i was def faster than usual. had to fix my ponytail in order for my helmet to go on and my hairband got stuck so i was futzing with that longer than i intended. also had trouble clipping into my pedals as i left T1. just stumbled oh well.

EDIT: I didn't have a 17 min transition, thank you! it was 1:47.
What would you do differently?:

figure out what to do w my hair.

Comments:

ah yes, this is when everyone that got out of the water after me starts passing me. my legs were definitely tired when i started. took a while to get a good, comfortable rhythm going. HOWEVER, i lost my chain and fell and lost about 2 minutes or so as a result. oops. i was nearing the top of one of the small hills, i was changing gears and my chain popped off. i had no momentum as i was already going slowly, couldn't clip out and knew i was going to fall. i had just passed someone and knew he was close behind me. i was prepared for him to crash into me, but he didn't! got my chain back on really fast and when i looked back there were SO MANY people coming from behind! i had to wait til i could get back in the mix.

and this is not 11 miles. last year and this i clocked the same distance from transition along the course and back.
What would you do differently?:

not fall!
Transition 2
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

put speedlaces in my shoes and that was GREAT! my new favorite piece of gear. put on my racebelt and visor and all was good. a little slow w the racebelt but otherwise fine.
Run
  • 30m 55s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 09m 40s  min/mile
Comments:

and...this is where i really start "losing" and really falling behind! i walked thru the water stations and walked once for about a minute or less cos i couldn't get a good deep breath. may need to examine the exercise induced asthma thing again...it took a good 15 min or so til my legs felt comfortable. i also don't believe this is a 5k course looking at my time...
What would you do differently?:

keep running.
Post race
Warm down:

walk from finish to transition.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

maybe the chain popping off?

Event comments:

i didn't stick around for anything after the race. i heard that they didn't have medals for quite some time. needless to say i didn't get one.

this is a very local race. it's cheap and it is fun. it is well organized for the most part in terms of crew out in the water, markings but not so much with the staff on hand. i picked up my numbers and chip and took my own t shirt, no one was paying attention. i have no idea what the post race stuff was like. i didn't walk thru sponsor village or anything, just wanted to get back home and start my day. it was nice to have raced and been on the road by 9am. :)
