Comments: i cheered k in and waved her to our spot. she racked the bike before i took the chip off her ankle, put it on mine, and took off. Run
Comments: i wasn't sure how the run would go, but as it got closer i was feeling good. it is a tough course, so i wasn't going to pr, but i decided i would be able to catch a lot of people (since most of them had just biked and i hadn't). 100 sounded like a nice round number so i started the run deciding to try to catch 100 people by the finish. it starts downhill so i was flying at the start. i saw karolyn on a downhill and said hello. i was counting people off and by mile 3 i had caught 45+ so i was on pace, but it was getting tougher. funny enough #38 was 38 years old and #40 was 40 years old, so they were actually labeled to help me count! the uphills were slow going and i had to keep squirting water on my head to avoid overheating. there were some sprinklers set up on the course, so that helped as well. the downhills were probably harder though as they are steep and windy. i actually had to swing wide so i could take the corners without going off course! as the run went on, the group thinned out and i didn't think i was going to make 100. i was at ~80 with just over a mile to go, but i came around a bend and hit a big pack. i moved ahead and saw enough people to make it if i pushed. i kept going and caught the 100th person <400 yards from the finish! i sprinted it in (squirting tim with water as he and the group cheered me in and finished with 101 people passed. not exactly fair as only ~20 of them were relays as well, but still pretty good. What would you do differently?: nothing. Post race
Warm down: had 3 or 4 freeze pops and then went for ice cream! What limited your ability to perform faster: nothing. Event comments: this is a great race with a lot of history. i'm not sure why it isn't more popular. the 2 transition areas aren't ideal and the swim is warm, but it is done very well. i would recommend it. k hasn't been running much because of a foot injury and i was more interested in training than racing this weekend so we decided to do the relay together. she swam and biked and i did the run as part of my long run.
tim and laura were doing the race and sis was volunteering. the race has separate transition areas so we all drove to t2 together and then laura, tim, and k took the bus to the start/t1. i laid in the car and waited.
the run was 6.9 and i was supposed to run 10miles, so i went for a 3 mile w/u run before they started coming into t2. then i hung out in the transition area and counted spots/splits for tim and laura. i got to see karolyn come in too.
