Swim
Comments: Goal: < 35:00 Made goal time, even if you add the distance that was shorted. This was the longest I have swam w/o a wetsuit. It had to be the best swim ever. Sighting & navagation was dead on. I felt strong the whole time. Breathing was perfect. I could have DNF'ed after that swim & I would still be happy. What would you do differently?: Bring a wetsuit to the race. Transition 1
Comments: After 13 waves, the transition area was a mud pit. It took me an extra 1 1/2 minutes to clean the mud off my feet before I could put my socks on. My rack location was great. Disappointed it took 3 minutes to get out of T1. Bike
Comments: Goal: < 2:40:00 After preriding the course a month prior, I knew that time would be very difficult. 2:45 was more realistic. So I still missed it by 2 minutes. But with my good swim, I had a good chance to start the run at 3:20. The road conditions were terrible, borderline dangerous. I lost a full bottle due to hitting an unavoidable hazard. I dropped my chain twice. It jammed the first time & I had to stop & fix it. I over-shifted. Rookie mistake. Nutrition: 4 gels, 2 H2O & 2 Gatoraide bottles. NOT ENOUGH! What would you do differently?: Eat more! Transition 2
Comments: Stayed in my shoes until I racked my bike. Didn't want to get my socks muddy. T2 was smooth. Run
Comments: Goal: 1:40:00 Run 7:30s. Didn't think that would be too much of a problem based on my running before the race. I was out of T2 in 3:23. 3 minutes behind schedule for a 5 hr total time. Still I thought I was doing okay. 1st mile great, 2nd mile okay, then I ran out of gas. Did not eat enough on the bike & I suffered for the next 11.1 miles. Terrible run. Walked a bunch. Lots of people were walking, so there was no shame. I couldn't buy a sub 9 minute mile. I did finish the last mile in 7:15. How weird, where did that come from?? Would have ruined my day except I had that great swim. What would you do differently?: Eat on the bike. Post race
Warm down: Walked around till I ate. What limited your ability to perform faster: Not enough food on the bike. I thought I had the nutrition figured out. I felt worse on the run than Lake Stevens. I thought my slow run at Lake Stevens was due to limited training. It was the lack of food on the bike too. This run time was 7 minutes slower than Lake Stevens and I was in much better shape. That's very disappointing that I blew it that way. Event comments: I would give it a 5 but the venue is just not the "Austin" one would expect. It is just not that attractive. The race is great except for that. Last updated: 2008-08-07 12:00 AM

Up & out to IHOP for breakfast at 4:30. It's always fun eating with the bar crowd when you are sober. Back to the hotel, load up the car and off to the race. About a 15 minute drive.
Parking was at least a mile from the start. There were suttle buses, but the lines were long. Decided to walk since it was advertised at being "less than a mile". After walking 10 minutes we saw the Mile 1 sign for the run. Hmmmm, it's now "less than a mile" SO warmup: about 20 minute brisk walk in the dark. Plenty of time remained to set up T area & bike. Then chilled till race start.
