Swim
Comments: Exciting finish for me as I just started training 5 weeks prior. To finish without stopping felt amazing. What would you do differently?: I got caught up in the crowd until the first buoy, but things thinned out after that and I felt that I was actually making progress. It would have been nice to position up front or to side to get swimming earlier. Transition 1
Comments: I had placed sandals just prior to the timing mats which made it much easier for me to run to T1. I also had stashed a shirt to put on while I ran which would have worked great if I was drier. What would you do differently?: Two things: 1. Either a trisuit and no shirt, or wait until at rack (and hopefully drier) to put on shirt. 2. Eat something during transition. Bike
Comments: Bike race started easily. Large cheering crowd certainly helped. I had not been on course before this so I was encouraged that the "hill" was not as bad as my mind had thought it would be. I am a stronger biker than this and was very surprised at my slow time. Just enjoying the scenery I guess. What would you do differently?: Push. Because I hadn't been on the course I had a tough time telling how much farther and felt I needed to conserve my energy to be able to complete it. But I had plenty of energy and will push more on the bike in the next one. Transition 2
Comments: Had some struggle getting my feet under me getting off the bike. I wanted back on because it was easier than walking. I did have difficulties in getting my bike back on rack. Ended up needing to reverse it from what it was originally. What would you do differently?: Again, eat something. It wasn't until after the race when I realized that I had input nothing but water for the entire race. Run
Comments: Easy pace throughout without stopping. I did get at least some water at nearly all of the stops, as well as a spray with a hose and a blast of water from volunteers. Enjoyable. What would you do differently?: Find a running buddy to help me keep a faster pace. It was easy to settle into a slower pace because of a slower crowd. Post race
Warm down: Saw family and friends while heading out on run. Great to see them after. Ate some fruit and drank lots of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: First timer mentality more than anything else. I didn't know how easy or hard it would be to complete all three disciplines so I sacrificed time in order to ensure that I would be able to complete the entire race. Now that I know what to expect I can give more. Event comments: Excellent race for a beginner. I was a little disappointed on the after-race event but I am spoiled by the Prouty! But, I have caught the bug and am doing my next sprint tri in a few weeks. Last updated: 2008-08-07 12:00 AM

Woke up at 4 a.m. to thunderstorms and pouring rain. Ate bananas and granola bars while checking out of hotel. Arrived on site to diminishing rain (thankfully!) and walked into transition area after visiting Trek trailer with friends.
Water was warmer than the air so we decided not to enter the water beforehand. Some simple stretches then a last minute run back to transition area to satisfy last minute hunger with some packaged crackers and peanut butter before our wave started (the last wave of the day).
