Pre-race routine:

8:31.08 start time for this gimmicky race. Lots of red Nike shirts everywhere. Music blasting. I didn't really know what to eat and stuff during the day because most races were in the morning. Had a light lunch and then had a protein shake around dinner time before the race. Drove to the Coliseum, found street parking, and then went to walk around the race area zoo.
Event warmup:

Used the restroom inside the Sports Arena. Hung out there for a while since it was warm. With about 20-30 minutes before the race, did a light jog around the concourse of the Sports Arena then stretched a bit before going outside to find a spot near-ish to the front.

Comments:

It was pretty cool running at night without sun or extreme heat to worry about, although it was still pretty warm that evening. Felt great for the first 4 miles or so, then I got a little tired, but was able to maintain my pace constant the whole way through. Lots of dancers and performers at many of the mile markers. My friend who I was running with took off at about mile 6 or so and I didn't have the energy to keep up. But I was able to maintain my pace and stuff finish pretty strong. Didn't stay for the Kayne/Common concert afterward, but I heard it was fun.
What would you do differently?:

Rest more the day before. I flew back to LA the morning of the race from the football game the day before, where I'd done lots of beer drinking and tailgating and stuff. And the food during the day came up at the end of the race when I stopped, so maybe stick to a liquid diet that day or something. Otherwise, in terms of my running, that was about as fast as I could go at this point.
Post race
Warm down:

Because of the food in my stomach, I puked into the port-a-potty right after I finished, but then felt fine sipping water and nibbling on some of the stuff they gave away at the end of the race. Walked around and stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training - I've been running now since May or so... 4 months since my first 5K, and I'm a lot faster than I was. I don't know how fast I can go yet, but at this point in time, that's about as fast as I can run.

Event comments:

A fun race with lots of people and a Kayne West concert and fireworks to finish it off!

First few miles, dodging other runners. Hit the mile 2 marker at 15:00 on the gun, but we were about 30-40 seconds behind the gun on our chip timer. Original goal was 7:30/mile pace and then see how we were feeling. We felt great, so we started increasing speed gradually at a good pace. At about the 5 mile mark, we'd kept up a faster than 7:15/mile pace so I knew we could break 45 minutes.
Course: Nice and flat run around the USC campus - up and down Figueroa, with little side jaunts down Adams and Exposition before ending back in Exposition Park.
