Pre-race routine:

Got up pretty early so I wouldn't be racing "first thing" in the morning. Got to the race pretty early and set up my transition area.
Event warmup:

Decided to actually do a warm up jog this time - about a mile. Pretty humid out.
Swim
  • 36m 48s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Current was pretty strong, but I stayed "up current" from the buoy's pretty well. My goggles leaked a little, and I treaded water more than I should have, but still cut 4 minutes off last year's time. I hadn't practiced in open water since my race in May, so I was getting a little "sea sick" from the extra bouancy. I walked in from the camp ground's swim area.
What would you do differently?:

Bi-lateral breathing, like in the pool. Swim the entire course, with no treading water breaks.
Transition 1
  • 02m 12s
Comments:

I walked the transition as I was feeling a little sick, but didn't waste any time at the bike. Only about 20 seconds slower than last year's T1.
What would you do differently?:

Run through the transition.
Bike
  • 1h 18m 3s
  • 26 miles
  • 19.99 mile/hr
Comments:

I had a great time on the bike. I tried to keep my cadance up, as I usually tend to grind out a bigger gear during past races. I just love the "roller coaster" part on the course that is Route 3. I finished just over 1 minute faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Not eat that nasty "Tropical" flavor Hammer Gel. Yuck!!
Transition 2
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

My feet almost cramped putting my socks on. I grabbed a couple salt tablets, which I think saved me for the run. I took a couple seconds to catch my breath before getting my shoes on. Put one GU in my pocket and ate another one on my way out of T2. This T2 was about 15 seconds slower than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Consider running without socks.
Run
  • 58m 45s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs were a little tight for the fist mile, but miles 2 thru the end were all faster. First Olympic that I ran the entire course (except for the water stations)!!! My calves held up, although that may be attributable to my compression socks. This was my first run since I strained my calf 3 weeks ago. While a little slow, I'm very pleased! About 45 seconds faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

I felt pretty good after that first mile or so. I'd like to drop my run times eventually!
Post race
Warm down:

Just rested on my transition area stool for a while.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall lack of training, esp four of the last five weeks prior to the race.

Event comments:

Even though the current is a little tough for me, I really enjoy this course. Lots of friendly volunteers and great food!
