Swim
Comments: We started already treading water, which lead to an awkward start for us newbies. I actually had a hard time telling if I was actually moving forward! Once I got the hang of it things were going well. I had some difficulty getting through the cluster of people around each of the two turns, but I managed. At one point another swimmer called over a kayak, and much to my suprise, the kayak's butt end ended up catching a small wave and knocking into me as I went by. I impressed myself when I instead of freaking out, took that as a hint to move faster. What would you do differently?: A mistake I didn't think I'd make, and need to make sure I never do again, is I got out of the water too early -- I was waist deep! I knew it the second I got up and thought it would be even more rediculous if I jumped back in, so I went with it, laughing the whole way to T1. Transition 1
Comments: There wasn't much time or space to run and jump on the bike. The first part of the course was up a hill, so you actually had to stop on your way out of T1, get on your bike and then go. What would you do differently?: Tape the moveable parts of my helment so they don't move! It took me forever to get out of T1 because the moveable part of my helping kept snapping off...3 times! No matter how hard I tried I couldn't fix it, so I bolted out of T1 with a crooked helment, hoping no officials would notice. They didn't. I knew it wouldn't fall off, but it wasn't exactly comfortable. Bike
Comments: I swear the race directors and description said the course was pretty flat with a couple of rolling hills and one good-sized hill. ALL HILLS! There were alot of women walking their bikes up several hills. They were brutal! I was hoping to pull a 35-30minute bike ride, but that would have been impossible for me. If I had known the course was like that I would've set a more reasonable goal. What would you do differently?: Drink more water. I've still yet to master the art of drinking while riding, but I'm working on it. Transition 2
Comments: Relatively painless T2. Dismounting directions were clear and race volunteers were very helpful in making sure you found your bike rack easily. Thanks to them! What would you do differently?: Set a tissue out to grab instead of digging through my bag for one (I tend to get a runny nose during rides and runs). Run
What would you do differently?: Train harder for the quick transition between bike and run. Normally I take my time making the transition, so my legs felt very different from practice. i need to do more real-time training...and more running in general. Post race
Warm down: Not much. It pretty much consisted of running to my boyfriend and then running into the transition area to get mine and Sasha's water bottles. Then I waited for Sasha to finish and gave her a huge hug and her water. That's about it. What limited your ability to perform faster: My lack of training and being it my first tri. I've gained alot of valuable experiences from this race that will definately help me prepare for the next. Event comments: The volunteers, participants and supporters were what made the race fun to be in. As a newbie, I pushed myself the best I knew how and learned a bunch along the way. I blame my mistakes along the way (i.e. turns in the swim, drinking while biking and preparation for transitions) on my lack of experience in the race day scenario. It can only get better from here! Race time was 8:30am, so we got up around 5:45 and took our time getting ready, re-checking our stuff and eating some light and healthy snacks before heading to the registration table.
Unfortunately, we didn't get a whole lot of time to warm up. Despite our efforts to get out early, we still had a lot of trouble figuring out the parking situation. Fortunately, we ended up with a little more time that expected and were able to jump in the water and swim around a bit before the start. I would have liked to gone for a little jog and a little ride around to double check everything.
Next race (aka next weekend) I'll be doing my test ride the day before the race to made sure I start off in the right gear. I got lucky this time around.
