Run
Comments: I started in the back but was passed by lots of people right away. The usual. Found someone to run with and paced with her the whole way. That helped a lot, because I'm sure I would have been slower without her. My knee started to feel tender, but I kept pushing. What would you do differently?: Maybe should have gone a bit slower. But would it have helped? Probably not. At least I had a good run (for me). Transition 1
Comments: Could not get my helmet on! WTF? Stupid hair wouldn't get in the right place. Arrggg! Other than that, it was fine. What would you do differently?: Dunno, shave my head? Bike
Comments: Ah, the Treadman course. How many times have I ridden this thing over the summer? Enough to know what I had to do. Out of T1, I started passing people and didn't get passed the whole time. So cool! Passed lots of people on the hill; that felt good. The headwind on Cty 5 was not too helpful, so my time for this ride wasn't spectatular. I did appreciate that wind once we turned onto Cty 3. Lovely tailwind on the way back. What would you do differently?: Not a thing. This was a great ride for me. Transition 2
Comments: Fairly average transition. Putting on that knee strap slows me down, but I was sure I'd need it. I was right. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Sprout wings and fly? Run
Comments: Uhg. My knee started hurting right out of T2. I knew I was in for a suffer-fest this time. I didn't care how slow I was going, it was just about finishing at this point. I tried to keep my cadence up, but it just hurt. I walked the water stop and turnaround. Just shuffled the rest. And watched all those people I passed on the bike fly by. Grrrr... What would you do differently?: Not much. Once the knee starts it's nonsense, there's not much to do about it. Alternating run/walk doesn't seem to help, so there was no point in that. Post race
Warm down: Chip off, drink found, time to chit-chat. What limited your ability to perform faster: Natural slowness, gravity, wind, bum knee. The usual. Event comments: Even with the smaller turn-out this year, it was a good race. It's a tough bike course and a lot of running (for me), but I'll do it again. I heard a rumor that they are moving it back to Labor Day weekend, so that will be better weather-wise. Last updated: 2008-08-18 12:00 AM

The alarm went off at 5am and I rolled out of bed around 5:20. Breakfast was coffee and a yummy muffin from Great Harvest. We rounded up the rest of the gear and headed out pretty much on time.
Since we were on time, there was time for a proper warm-up. To avoid the congestion on 75th street, we rode out and back on Cty 3 and did a short run. I noticed that my legs felt dead and my right knee was angry. Great. That wasn't a good sign.
