Swim
  • 07m 54s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

Pretty crowded out to the first bouy. Ended up taking the 1st turn very wide. Had plenty of room along the back ropes, actually was too far away looked to get closer to someone to draft off of. Swim in was a little difficult visions wise (very bright sun). Just tried to follow some other swimmers. Started toward the middle back. passed a lot of swimmers, so i'm still not really sure i'm lining up in the right place to start.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe line up more toward the front/middle of the wave.
Try to take the turns a little sharper.
Try to draft better on the wider part of the course.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition is part of the bike time. I thought the transition was pretty good. I did help another racer with his helmet, he couldn't seem to get in buckled. Probably took about 30 seconds extra.
What would you do differently?:

Not much.

Comments:

This part of the course is killing my time. really need to work on pacing and navigating this course better. I'm not sure how much of it is me and how much may be due to the fact that my bike is 22 yrs old !! Maybe a bike with front fork shocks would help. IDK !! This is getting a little frustrating. I would have thought the new tires and lower air pressure would have helped. Back to the drawing board.
What would you do differently?:

I think i may have tried to go to hard in the bumpy areas and it was working against me. The second week i did the race i pretty much just kept an even pace and i ended up with pretty much the same time and it seemed much easier. I think i actually went faster at the end of the bike leg this time than any other time before. I did seem to struggle on some hills tho. My legs felt a big fatigued.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Transition time is included with the run. Pretty good transition. I did take about 20 to 30 seconds to drink before the run. I'm thinking a camel pack might help so that i can drink on the bike. It's impossible to drink from a water bottle on the bike trail.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Run
  • 27m 48s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

I thought this was a pretty good run. Ended up with about the same time as last race. I thought i actually started out better and thought the rest of the race was pretty much about the same as last time. I did catch a root and nearly fall, took a few seconds to get back on rhythmn.
What would you do differently?:

Not too much. Try not to trip ;)
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, drank some gatoraid. Showered down to get all the sand & mud off. Was lucky enough to find Jeff and his family in the crowd who were smart enough to bring a 12-pack of beer and nice enough to offer me (and a bunch of others) a beer. Thanks Jeff !!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Again - the bike course. Leg strength, inexperience with navigating MTB course, old bike.

Event comments:

The Windy Trail Series has been a great experience. Tonite's race was the last of the season :( Looking forward to next year. Apparently, participation has grown quite a bit. The organizers have done a pretty good job dealing with all the entries and making sure that everyone that shows up gets to race.

I can't seem to figure out how to get a good bike time on this course. I wore my bike shoes this time, adjusted the clips to stay in on the bumps better, put new knobbier tires on, kept the tire pressure low (45 lbs). I ended using the smallest front gear to get up hills, which i hadn't done in the past. This seemed to work better. I can't seem to figure out how to navigate the bumpy, rooty parts of the course. It seems the harder i worked the more the roots just slowed me down. I really cruised thru the last mile or two which was much cleaner and a lot of downhill. I think i need to work on leg strenght as well. Might just be having trouble pushing up the hills. I also ended up off in a big pile of sand where i had to dismount and get back on course. I'm going to do some more moutain biking, hopefully this will help ;)
