Swim
Comments: Swim overall was better than expected. Mentally I was more prepared for the chaos than in the past. And there was chaos. A lot of jostling at first. As I finally reached the far-out bouy on the near side and prepared to round, I realized I was too far inside and had to veer over to the left to get around it. Apparently I got in some die-hards way because he shouted @$$hole! at me as he went by clobbering me in the process. Surprisingly that kind of motivated me and I swam strong for the whole rest of the swim and felt strong at the finish. I was even able to let out a big Whoohoo! at water exit whereas last race I was gassed after a sprint swim. What would you do differently?: gotta figure out a way to warm up for these town lake swims. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was pretty fast for me. Had socks pre-rolled and got socks and shoes on quick, Shirt went on pretty well. Ran in the biking shoes but it wasnt a problem. All in all pretty smooth What would you do differently?: might consider a trisuit or tri top w/number belt and so I dont have to put on a shirt in transition. Might also consider sockless and practicing the shoe trick before next time although that means getting new bike shoes. Bike
Comments: Felt good and reasonable fast on the bike. remembered to drink. had some calf cramping on left side up the hills on laps 2-3 but worked it out. Took a Carbboom vanilla orange gel at about mile 20 to try to boost for the run. My first gel ever. I know I know dont try anything new on race day. It was nasty and I dont know if it helped at all but at least I didnt yack. Actually had a guy draft me for a bit who was totally gassed doing the sprint distance and seemed genuinely impressed by my bike speed (another first). We chatted for a few and I gave him some encouragement and it made me realize what a long way I've come in the last year. What would you do differently?: I guess drink more although I felt pretty full and was worried about having to pee for the first half. When it went away, I should have started chugging more. Transition 2
Comments: Not sure what took so long in T2 since it seemed fast to me. I guess tying the shoes. What would you do differently?: get the zip ties for shoes. Run
Comments: absolutely abysmal run. disappointing after so much training. Quads began to cramp less than 1 mi into run and I basically ran with Charlie-horses in both legs the entire time. had to walk through water stops to try to loosen them up and would then push on at progressively slower paces to try to keep it at bay but the cramping would just return. It was all I could to force myself to maintain a run to the next water stop. I gritted it out for the last 1/2 mi or so to finish running but thought I was going to buckle as they were taking my timer off. I was smiling though. i finished the MOFO.... What would you do differently?: Need to get some advice on the cramping issue. Run more? leg weights, squats? more/longer bricks? better hydration plan? Post race
Warm down: walked around the finish area and had a fat tire after 2 bottles of dilute sports drink What limited your ability to perform faster: Cramps in the quads during the run Event comments: Great first Oly. I'll remember it forever. I will get better on the run! Last updated: 2008-08-21 12:00 AM

Stretched pretty well the night before and pre-hydrated with water and gatorade. limited to 1 beer during the CU-CSU game. Race day, woke up at 5:00 am after sleeping terribly. Could not get to sleep and then woke up every 1/2 hr-1 hr to look at the clock or pee. Still woke up feeling ready to go. All the parts seemed to be functioning. Ate yogurt and granola and a banana. grabbed my gear and headed out. Got to transition around 5:50 and had plenty of time to set up. Got down to water's edge hoping to poach a warmup as they seemed to be letting the elites in to warm up but just as I got down there, realized I didnt have my chip on and had to run back and grab it.
Just a little arm-swinging and leg-pumping as they wouldnt let us in the water.
