Pre-race routine:

I live about 1.5 hrs away from the race site, but it's an easy drive. I had a buddy doing the race with me, So I waited for him to show up, we left the house at about 4:10am. I had some coffee, and a light breakfast made up of a small cliff bar and a small granola bar. We made our way north noticing alot of lightening around us.. Not a good omen, but in the end i guess it just wasn't gonna matter... it's race day! We arrived at the race site just before 6am, did the registration thing... etc...
Event warmup:

After Registration, we set up our transitions, decided to take spots near the bike dismount. Then visited the "Facilities" and I went for a warm up run. Came back, realized it was time to wetsuit up... and listened to the pre race announcements... and then..... the rain came....
Just enough to get everything wet.

  • 400 meters
  • 01m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

I was very happy with the swim, i stayed out of trouble, the weather was nice, and I just went as fast as I could. I fell down coming out of the water, that was kinda "funny".
What would you do differently?:

I would try and swim faster :) and attempt to not fall down? yeah, that would be good.

Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

its a long T1... but other than having trouble getting my left foot out of my wetsuit.. everything went well.
What would you do differently?:

be better at getting my stupid Wetsuit off.
Bike
  • 44m 20s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 22.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Crashing was my own fault, I overcooked the turn in wet conditions. I am truly just happy i didn't wreck the racewheels my buddy lent me.

What would you do differently?:

hmm well, not crashing would be a good start.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

I parked near the bike dismount to limit how far i had to run with the bike shoes on. I had a little trouble getting the left running shoe on, but all in all it wasn't too bad.
What would you do differently?:

I need to buy Yankz.
Run
  • 21m 8s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 14s  min/km
Comments:

The run went well, I pr'd and I cannot complain.
What would you do differently?:

try and run faster :)
Post race
Warm down:

My warm down included drinking 3 bottles of water Talking with TriDDS and Aaron and eating a sandwich. It was great to meet a couple Donkeys, I had a ton of fun at this race and collected my first EVER hardware... its a nice big plaque that says 1st Place MENS 30-34 Age Group!!!!
(ok, its not that big, but i am happy)
My best placing at this race prior was a 26th in 2006, so 12th was very happy!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

well, the crash probably didnt' help. All in all I PR'd on the bike and on the run. My T's could be faster, but can't they always be?

Event comments:

I like this race alot, its small, well organized, and generally well run. About the only thing I would ever change is it would be nice to have transition times taken. OH, and they should just call it a 16.5 mile bike :)

Its a great race, and a great value for the money.

Age Group: 0/16
Overall: 11/214
Performance: Good
Suit: full wetsuit
Course: The water was actually warm, its a beach start... on a rather "pebbly?" beach. The swim is a counterclockwise Triangle, it is very well marked and probably a little "short". When the wave started i decided i am a faster swimmer than water walker, so I and one other guy were just kinda hammering. turn one.. good, turn two, good, turn 3 and headed back in. I got my arms out of the suit as I left the water. As I ran thru T1 I heard allll these people yelling "GO NATE" which is odd since i knew none of them... I came to find out after asking the kid running next to me that he was also Nate... (i thought I was losing it)

167 HR 7.2 mph SW wind, gusts to 9mph The course is long, they say 16 miles, but in fact it is just over 16.5. It is always long, they should just label it that way.
Wind: Some
Course: The course is flat, well controlled with only a few turns. It is an out and back, with a loop at then end. Here is a link. http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/6583067 The beginning gave a nice tailwind, then the course heads west and it was all going well until the 7.5 mile mark.. I took a hard right hander too fast. Going into the turn I was telling myself to stay inside the center line paint because I did not want to eat it on slick paint.... well, i was going toooo fast anyway, and leaned too much to avoid the paint. So I laid the bike down at just over 20mph. The cop at the corner came over to make sure I was alright, and to help me get my stuff off the road. I got back on the bike and started moving. I did my best to get back up to speed. I realized that I had bent the rear derailleur hanger, so I only had 4 gears to work with... The rest of the ride was uneventful, but I will say, being in aerobars leaning on a bleeding elbow is not how you want to finish a ride. I was very happy to get off the bike. There is minor damage that needs to be fixed, but nothing major. My average speed was 22.3 mph, it is the first time i have ever broken 22mph. I am pretty pumped.

175 HR 6.4 mph Wind from the South West.
Course: In fear of my body tightening up after the crash I tried to pace myself out fast as i possibly could. I have NEVER finished a 5k in less than 21 mins so I reallllllly wanted to get this one under. I kept pace behind an older individual for the first 3rd of the course, he was keeeping me going for a while, but before the turn around he left me, and I was on my own. After I hit the turn around I was still feeling good, and I just tried to keep my pace up. Shortly after that I felt the right side of my body starting to tighten up a little. I pushed through the best I could. All in all, i still PR'd on the run, and I was very very close to going sub 21, but it was not meant to be I guess. http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/6583069
