Age Group Rank = 9/10
Pre-race routine:

Ate oatmeal/coffee/water and had a nice Bthrm trip before race. Got to race 1:30hr before gun. Let Eddie help me get my TA set up. Not really nervous. Gu'd right before.
Event warmup:

Only warmed up in the water for 50-ish yds. A little unsure of myself as far as what to do to warm up in the water. Very apprehensive about my strategy with swimming first and LAST.

Comments:

Age Grp Rank: 10th & 8th out of 10
Overall Rank: 82nd & 73rd out of 84

Just terrible!
What would you do differently?:

Everything! First, I wouldn't try to stay with the pack. I won't take off at the gun so fast. Take close attention to my Hr so I don't EVER panic again. I really thought I was going to die! But I didn't. So I will keep doing these crazy races and get better at it.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1- good trans from swim to run. I started to put my helmet and made a HORRIBLE last minute decision to not wear socks. I smiled and waved to friends and stopped taking the race too seriously because the bad first swim. I enjoyed it.
T2- good trans from run to bike. Stayed in the same shoes since I was in cages
T3- good trans from bike to run. Very fast, just took of helmet and went.
T4- good trans from run to swim. Kept it calm for the swim.
Bike
  • 46m 35s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 16.01 mile/hr
Comments:

I don't believe the bike includes a transition. I felt like my bike was strong considering I was still in cages. I really gave it all I had.
What would you do differently?:

Clip in and continue training. Only time will improve this.

Run
  • 28m 38s
  • 2.75 miles
  • 10m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

This run includes either T1/T2/T3/T4. I realized very quickly that my decision to not wear socks was a gross error in judgement! I got blisters within the first half mile. Slow, slow, slow! I held back for the bike and especially for the second swim. I was talking to campers, that's how slow I was going (like a stroll in the park).
What would you do differently?:

Speed up and suck it up over the bad swim!
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out with all my family/friends that came out to watch my first race. What a great bunch. I'm so very blessed. Stayed around to watch Eddie get first place in he age group. Go Eddie!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The dreaded swim.

Event comments:

Setup does a great job.

Performance: Bad
This includes T1 or T4 not sure which. This was tough! I was ready for tackling the lake, I was even ready for all the people around me. Where I screwed up was in calculating that I could stay at the pace of the pack. I forgot to take into account that swimming is my weakest link and that there would be very strong swimmers. And that I would NOT be able to sustain in the middle of the pack. I CRASHED AND BURNED QUICKLY! I wasn't even to the first bouy when I started hyperventilating and then, of course, the panic set in. I'm embarrased to say I had to hold onto the Lifegaurd canoe for a few minutes to catch my breath. Once I had recovered I just took my time in the water. This really set the tone for the remainder of my race. 2nd swim: boy my heels burned in the water once my blisters were exposed. Somehow I managed not to get some freaky infection from the water, thank God. I swam slow and easy with no problems.
