Total Time = 3h 18m 48s
Overall Rank = 115/270
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 11/26
Pre-race routine:

Slept very little the night before. Got up easily and made tea had 1/2 sweet potato from night before and some dry cereal.

Event warmup:

Ran a bit and stretched. Walked around. Talked to family and Lesley. Looked for Dave.
Swim
  • 24m 47s
  • 966 meters
  • 02m 34s / 100 meters
Comments:

Lots of people and hard to get into open water to swim for first 100 - 150 meters. Side stroked until I could get open water, then smooth swimming. I drafted some and tried to keep up with a girl in a purple cap (all ours were red). Thanks purple cap woman. It was a good swim and my sighting is really pretty on. Amazing how much I've learned since my first open water tri swim in April.
What would you do differently?:

Either start farther up and swim like hell to get open water or start farther back and try to make up time with some open water.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Transition went fine.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I can think of.
Bike
  • 1h 44m 45s
  • 31.4 miles
  • 17.99 mile/hr
Comments:

Left calf cramped up early on and legs felt kind of tired. My back hurt some, too, but I averaged almost 18 mph and saw myself up at 22 plus sometimes.
What would you do differently?:

Take a salt tablet earlier in the day to fend off cramps. Not slow up when I think only a mile or two more??
Transition 2
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

Had to really go to the bathroom. Not a bad transition time considering.
Run
  • 1h 04m 2s
  • 6.55 miles
  • 09m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt okay and my legs weren't too bad at first. I had a twinge in my knee but kept thinking, I'm not stopping, so it had just better go away and after a couple of miles it did. Every time I felt my pace slowing, I tried to speed it up some and get some nutrition. I was able to finish fairly strong and thanks to Nicole from Tucson I finished stronger than I thought I could. She talked to me about a mile out and it really helped. Thanks, Nicole! If it had been just a 10K I would have PR'd.
What would you do differently?:

?
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched. Talked with family and Lesley. :) Got some rice and beans and just enjoyed the fact that I did this.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat might have contributed some and I supposed had I trained harder, but I did all I could and finished my first race at this distance, so I'm pleased.

Event comments:

Red Rock does an EXCELLENT job. Great atmosphere and environment. Slip and slide was fun. Can't wait to see the photos.

Course: Lots of turns. It was supposed to be 27 and it was 31 and change so I slowed up a bit at 26 thinking my legs would get a little break before running. Smooth roads most of the way. Very little inclines and some scenery, red rock outcroppings, but kind of boring. Wish I had my ipod or someone to talk to, other than myself. :)
