Run
Comments: Started in the front of the wave and stayed in about the top 10 of wave. Worked hard but felt pretty good. Ran in my cycling jacket which heated me up right away. Slightly slower than last year, but with the extra clothes, Im happy with the split. What would you do differently?: more speed work, less clothes. Transition 1
Comments: way too many plastic bags to work through, plus put my running shoes back in a plastic bag. What would you do differently?: just let everything get wet or better yet...no rain. Bike
Comments: This is why I didn't want race in the rain. I believe this is my slowest pace ever for a race. In the end though, this was a big victory for me. To understand, you have to go back to last December, when I was in a serious car accident during a snow storm. In a nutshell, I was driving down the freeway when someone lost control in front of me and there was nothing I could do but run into the pile up in front of me. I still have 'issues' with this in certain situations. Well as I headed out on the bike in the rain, I started having issues. I was frozen with fear. My shoulders hurt so much the first few miles because I was gripping the bars so tight. I had images in my head of the newbies in front of me crashing and wiping out and me being unable to stop. It was no fun. I was getting passed like crazy, including by people on mountain bikes (yikes) It was all I could do to keep going, but I did. Finally, about mile 12, I had a conversation with myself, I said "You are a Donkey Dammit, just DTFU"...and I did. I don't know what happened but it worked. From that point I rode mad. (mostly at myself) Shortly after this I went by my parents house. They were standing out in rain and cheering loudly for me as I went by. This really boosted me. I started passing lots of people. I also was yelling (in a nice way) at a lot of people. There was a ton of people riding on the left or riding two or three abreast. They needed to move over. The last 5 miles I averaged about 19mph. It felt good. It reminded me of when I finally overcame my swim demons. I hope that is the case. Because I don't want to repeat the experience of the first 12 ever again. What would you do differently?: Not have issues with the rain. Transition 2
Comments: yeah pretty crappy. Run
Comments: as I came into T-2 I yanked off my jacket and decided to run just in my Donkey Jersey, because I'm a Donkey Dammit! Because of my poor ride I was running with the slower crowd and passed many people. I got a stitch about a 1/2 mile in and it never went away. I grabbed some water at one of the aid stations, but it didn't really help. What would you do differently?: not get a stich Post race
Warm down: ate some pancakes What limited your ability to perform faster: some crazy fear on the bike. Event comments: As craptacular as this race was I feel good for a few reasons. First, I hope I had a breakthrough with the fear thing on the rainy bike. Second, this performance is so poor that it has a helped light a fire under me for the off season. That is a good thing. Watched the weather before I went to sleep. Weather guy said rain was in forcast, but would be dry between about midnight and noon. Super. No problem. Slept like a baby. Woke up about 5:45 to the familar sound of rain drops on the window. Then my wife rolled over and asked if they still do the race if it is raining. Yep they do. I guess the weatherman was wrong. Surprise. In 2006, I walked away from the Tri-ing for Children's race because a storm broke out pre-race and it was raining at start. I felt terrible for doing so and promised myself that if I ever had an opportunity to race in the rain again, I would do it. So, even though the prospect was very unappealing, I made good on that promise today. I had the usual breakfast (2 bagels and banana) and sipped on a bottle of Perpetuem and then headed over in the rain. I cut it close because I knew my wave was going out about 1/2 hour after 1st one and didn't want to stand around too long. Got there 10 minutes before transition closed. Couldn't find my exact rack spot, but there was a ton of empty spots (about 250 DNS) so I just picked a spot on my rack and set up everything quickly. I covered my bag, my helmet and my shoes in plastic bags.
Did about a 10 minute run to warm up.
