Swim
Comments: I HATE it when swim caps are the same color as buoys (orange). The sun was very challenging on top of that as was the small chop heading away from the beach. I was 5 seconds slower than my St. Paul swim time for the same distance. What would you do differently?: I'm not sure if my placing is due to my performance or the higher calibre of people entered in this race compared to St. Paul. My wave felt like it went out fast - the clydesdales Saturday were good racers. I don't think I could have sited any better given the conditions. Transition 1
Comments: Since I can't do the shoes-on-bike trick, I haven't really tried to streamline my T1 in general. I sit down to pull my legs out. I seem to have done alright time-wise even though I didn't push it up those stairs. What would you do differently?: Get my cap and goggles off sooner. I waited until I was seated before I realized they were still on. Bike
Comments: I knew I wanted to leave some energy for the run as that's my hardest event and probably where my extra energy is best spent. This is my longest race so far and I took most of a gel in at mile 14. What would you do differently?: Get a professional bike fit next year? I feel like my position is still not quite as good as it can be. Transition 2
Comments: This race compared to St. Paul my heart wasn't pounding in each transition. While somewhat slow in transition, I wasn't panicked. What would you do differently?: Try to get my feet on top of my shoes? Again - no tri bike shoes so I'm not too comfortable pulling that trick. Run
Comments: Whoever said the run course was short may have been right. I was running 9:00 to 9:15 I think but ended up with 8:55 average per mile. I felt good and finished off a gel around mile 2. What would you do differently?: Knowing how I felt at this distance I might spend a bit more energy on the bike instead of saving myself. Post race
Warm down: I drank lots of water, then got my results ticket. What limited your ability to perform faster: I held back just a smidge. I dont' think I could do much faster, but maybe a little. Event comments: hazelmn - good race. You were 2 places ahead of me in the clydesdale division. Last updated: 2008-09-07 12:00 AM

Alarm went off at 4:30. Dozed until 4:45. Didn't get out of the house until 5:30 or so (originally planned on 5). I had a bowl of Fiber One cereal (no jokes, please) and some orange juice. I had a Powerade and a Clif bar packed to munch on at the race site. I had everything packed the night before so I just had to throw the backpack in the car and look at the map.
I arrived just as transition was opening up - I had to ask which side was bike out. I got a great spot about 20 feet from bike out in one of the wider rows. Folks around my spot were pretty talkative - some younger guys. The guy next to me I ended up talking to before and after he put on his wetsuit. We had a good laugh as his wetsuit was on backwards. "Are you kidding me - this is how I practiced with it!" It was one of those body glove watersport wetsuits. I think he was embarassed, but a couple of told him that all he needs to do is win his division and everyone else will start wearing theirs backwards, too.
I said hi to the people I swim with at Plymouth Lifetime: the Kellers, Kevin Olsen and Terry Alexander.
The only physical warmup I did was some swimming about 20 minutes before the start.
