Swim
Comments: This was my first tri so I don't have much to compare to but the current was against us going around the first turn, the current picked up with us, and the current pushed us after the second turn. I had to backstroke it going out, got passed by a couple waves after me and wasn't the last one in on my swim. It was also good to know what it feels like to swim in a race: drafting, getting bumped, getting hit by hands. The water was brackish and grey in color and the water warm enough not to wear wet suits, but hey, who am I to set the rules. Transition 1
Comments: Most of the racks were empty when I got there. I was hooting and hollering because I finished the swim and was thoroughly pleased. It took time to get socks on and pose for a picture. What would you do differently?: Get out faster. Bike
Comments: I spent a good 5 or so minutes helping out a guy who could not get on his bike cause his clips were dirty and could not clip in. I was more overcome with the urge to help a stranded passenger than see him fail all together. I had to repass those I passed and got to meet some really nice people along the way. My time for the course was better than I expected and hoped for. I did my ride on my mountain bike. What would you do differently?: Not help the guy out on the course (regrettably and sorry Dan's of the world) as those extra few minutes might have placed me second to last in my age group. I'd also want to ride on a road bike at a minimum for a faster time and as a woman said to me as she passed me on the bike "mountian eh, doing twice the work." Transition 2
Comments: Very speedy in this transition. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Tons of support passing people along the way. It was great to see the same people I saw on the ride and passed on the run and a rack mate. What would you do differently?: Figure out how to get under my time. Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster: Road bike. Feeling exhuberant after the swim. Event comments: Great support by volunteers, awards were fun, and had a great first time experience. I'd do the event again. I thought what made this event really special was the Mid Atlantic region championships and the student athletes. It was also very interesting to hear the stories of the participants and how they got there and how they did or did not prepare for the race. Last updated: 2008-09-08 12:00 AM
