Swim
Comments: Drafted like a Mo Fo and it helped. Finally lost the draft at the 2nd to last buoy. But that was with <100 yards to go. When I had no one to draft from, I was swimming very crooked. What would you do differently?: Still can't swim straight in the OW. But this was by far my fastest OW swim. Beat last years swim time by almost 2.5 minutes. Transition 1
Comments: No problems getting out of wetsuit or into bike gear. Too many people stopped just past the mounting line... I ran past them, jumped on the bike and I was off! What would you do differently?: Could of ran out of the water to T1 faster but my HR/breathing felt good, so who knows. Bike
Comments: Felt real fast on the bike. Maybe it was the new P2C and Zipp 909s but on the straights I saw my speed was around 22mph. The puddles right in the middle of some 90 degree turns going through the Sea World parking lot was hairy though. My seat binder came loose a few times and the nose would point down. I had to pull up on the nose to get it back to level. I was stoked when I came into T2 and saw very few bikes in my rack. What would you do differently?: Make sure the seat binder is tightened correctly, duh. Still, my bike time was over 6 minutes faster than last year. Transition 2
Comments: I love love love using mountain bike shoes and pedals. I can jump on and off the bike really easy and I can run through transition without slipping. What would you do differently?: Bonehead mistake of the day- I started running the wrong way in transition. But, it probably only cost me about 10 seconds max. Run
Comments: I saw Mad Cow at the beginning of the run. I think he had just finished being a swim buddy. I said to him "come on Tom I need you to pace me!" My legs felt very heavy again and I couldn't find the top gear. Whenever I got passed I tried to hang on to that person as long as I could. Got passed by about 4 guys in my wave. What would you do differently?: More brick training I guess. Can't complain too much. Beat last year's run time by 2 minutes and a 5K PR for me (including stand alone 5K races). Post race
Event comments: Very nice race. Huge field for a sprint, 1460 athletes. Very satisfied for my last race of the year. Beat last year's overall time by almost 7 minutes. PRs in the swim and run was great as well. Now it's 5-6 weeks of taking it easy and cross-training before California 70.3 training begins. Last updated: 2008-09-08 12:00 AM

Up at 4AM. 1/2 cup oatmeal. Drank water through the morning and a caffeinated gel ~40 minutes before race start.
Jumped in the water about 10 minutes before my wave and loosened up.
