Swim
Comments: Swim went well, better than expected actually. What would you do differently?: drifted a few times and had to get back into the pack, could have shaved a few more seconds off of my total time. Transition 1
Comments: went well, found my bike no problem. took too long to get my gloves on. Bike
Comments: i was on a regular road bike and chose not to use the aero bars on this race since it seemed so hilly, i think this was a mistake. i got caught up in a pack of pretty fast riders and was able to keep pace. however, averaging nearly 21mph just about took everything out of me. i was exhausted afterwards. What would you do differently?: keep my own pace rather than be tempted to keep up with others who are obviously faster Transition 2
Run
Comments: i hit the wall after mile 1, with 5.21 to go. i dragged myself along, barely jogging the remaining distance. i had nothing left in the tank after the bike portion. my whole body began aching around mile 3, and my feet just about went numb before i finished the race. it was painful to say the least and made me question whether or not I could compete in a race this distance, i nearly passed out after the race. i had a minor knee injury a few weeks before, so my running training was also not where it should have been. this was a completely flat run course too, 10 minutes per mile was just awful. What would you do differently?: back off on my bike pace and do much more running training. Post race
Warm down: stand up and breathe and try to not pass out. What limited your ability to perform faster: weak training on the run, recent knee strain. Event comments: I would certainly do this race again in hindsight. I recently completed the LA tri and had a great experience and a much better finish. i think i have learned to better prioritize my efforts on each segment and will have a much better overall time next year.
