Pre-race routine:

My first half, yay!!! Started increasing carb intake a couple of days before the race, then stopped eating solid foods after 2pm the day before. Drank a protein smoothie for dinner and drank lots of water. At 4 am race morning drank an Ensure, about 8oz. of coffee, and set out to the race with my hubby.
Event warmup:

Stretched my problem areas a bit and swam for a few minutes. The rubber strap broke, so I'm glad I brought an extra pair!!!
Swim
  • 53m 31s
  • 2111 yards
  • 02m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

If I could move FORWARD as fast as I move off course, I'd be the female Michael Phelps. Don't know what my problem was.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better and draft more.
Transition 1
  • 03m 27s
Comments:

Getting out of the water went great - not dizzy or anything. But good Lord it would have been nice to have more mats to walk on. My poor feet :( Got to talk with a few friends and family who were by the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Other than have a stronger sense of urgency, nothing.
Bike
  • 3h 33m 43s
  • 56 miles
  • 15.72 mile/hr
Comments:

I used my normal gel and gatorade intake schedule, but it turned out to be WAY too many carbs. I became a little nauseated around mile 26, a little more around mile 30, then completely sick at mile 36. I switched to the best water I have ever tasted in my life from the aid stations, which definitely helped me feel a little better by the time I finally reached mile 56.
What would you do differently?:

Space out gels more and increase my water:Gatorade ration a tad.
Transition 2
  • 02m 55s
Comments:

I was really fighting a bad attitude at this point!!! I did NOT want to go out and run 13.1 miles. I was very doubtful of being able to finish. I walked my bike in instead of running, put sunblock on, and at least ran out to keep my legs going.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 2h 56m 44s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran to about mile 1.5 and started to walk. This was not a good sign! After throwing up in my mouth a couple of times (TMI?) I decided, "OK, i'm going to walk for 15 minutes, and then I'm running because I want to get the hell off this course!" So I did. Eventully the nausea went away as I had been taking in more water and slightly decreasing carbs for the past hour, and soon I felt great! I walked through the aid stations, eating a gel every third station, water EVERY station (half of it I poured on myself), and sips of Gatorade every two stations. It probably sounds complicated but what else am I going to think about?

I had been running in the bad August heat, some days 100+, so the heat was not nearly as bad as it could have been for me. I didn't overheat, my hips did get sore, though. I poured ice water down my shorts whihc actually made my hips feel better because there were ice cubes being held up against my skin. i'm glad I wore tri shorts!

I know a lot of people complain about the lack of shade and rather daunting appearance of the run course (mainly the dam), but at least I didn't have to do a bunch of turnarounds. I got to just look down at the white road stripe and just keep moving forward. I knew it was going to be hot with no shade, I just didn't expect to feel so LONELY.
What would you do differently?:

Reduce/space out carb intake just little more on the bike so that I don't vomit when I'm trying to run :)
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched out my neck and legs, walked all the way back into the Marina because my hubby left his cell phone, ate some Sharkies, roast beef sandwich, and had a cool shower. Put Aloe on my patchy sunburn.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Too much jet-fuel Gatorade, not enough water in the beginning, and Gels too close together.

Event comments:

Why does Jack have to be so MEAN?!

I agree with others - post race was a little lame. However, I took almost the entire time, so at the same time I'm glad there were still people around when I finished! The Volunteers were awesome and I always had an aid station within a reasonable distance. Definitely felt like I would have lots of support if I suddenly crashed or collapsed from exhaustion.
