Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:30am to drive from Orlando to Melbourne. While at home, I ate some granola with banana and had some water, loaded up the car, and got everybody up and going. Arrived at race site at 5:30am and checked in. Headed to transition to set up my area, walked around looking for water for my water bottle (bike).
Event warmup:

Walked through the transition area from the swim and was trying to get visualize T1 and T2. Stretched a bit and watched the Olympic start
Swim
  • 10m 51s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

Wow, I was nervous and unsure of the swim when I realized it was a deep water start. But there are no secrets to it, I just waited a minute before the wave start to jump in. I was feeling pretty good about the swim, and know I could have pushed harder. I decided to start in the back of the group, but could have started more towards the middle, I was swimming over a lot of people.
What would you do differently?:

Could have started more towards the middle of the group. Drafting was very bad (need to learn how to do that). Could have pushed a little more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

I catched up with a lot of people from my AG on T1. Put the glasses/Helmet on, then put the shoes on. Couldn't clip the helmet on, I think my had was a bit shaky (?).
What would you do differently?:

Practice transition, and learn how to put the shoes while ridding. There were just too many people around during T1
Bike
  • 1h 01m 43s
  • 15.9 miles
  • 15.46 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was the course I wanted to go all out, but for some reason it really sucked. I don't know why, but I just could not get my pace and speed up to what I was doing during training. The winds were brutal to say the least, specially going up the bridges with the head on!!!! When they were head on, I just decided to cruise along and save myself for the cross winds. Once out of the headwinds, buildings were protecting us from the crosswinds. I tried to get on the aerobars but my back was just killing me. I didn't drink any water (need to get an aero bottle). The last bridge was kinda fun, no really it was, specially going down hill (hit 38.5 mph)
What would you do differently?:

Could have pushed myself harder on the bike, that's what I was focusing my training on since I couldn't run (due to injury). was about 5 min shy of getting to my "confortable" goal of 55 min. Need to get a lot of fluids and nutrition (1 gel) in to get ready for the run. NEED to get an AERO BOTTLE!!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Again, need to practice transitions, jumping off moving bike, taking shoes off, etc.
Couldn't run wit the stupid bike shoes on!!!
What would you do differently?:

Train, Train, Train !!!!
Run
  • 38m 9s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 10m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew the run was going to suck, and it did !!!! I had some shin splints while training, and had not been able to run for the last 2.5 weeks. I didn't know where the water stations were, combined with not enough fluid intake from the bike, I was definatly thirsty and feeling the consequences. I saw a few people from my AG just pass by me. Saw Donto on the run, but didn't talk much (was in some serious pain from my shins).
On the second water station I took a gel and 3 cups of water
What would you do differently?:

Train the run, and at least hold my postion from the bike. I'm going to the run store and get my run analysis and figure out was is causing the shin splint. Definetly going to focus on some running and speed during off season
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water, and met up with my wife and son. Walked around and went into the area where they had some fruit, Gatorade and Bagels. Had plenty of fluids and a bagel. Saw some fellow BT'ers and decided to had home before any awards, etc (it wasn't a really pretty day out).

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The shin splints definetly limited my run, and of course the lack of running on my training. The headwinds were a killer on the bike. First race in 2 years.

Event comments:

The volunteers were great, and there were lots of them!!! The venue was pretty well organized with plenty of Law Enforcement on the streets and volunteers directing everyone (on the Run and the Bike). It was nice seeing some fellow BT'ers and getting to know them. Can't wait for next year's race. Definetly going to do this race again.
