Swim
Comments: My wave was pretty crowded and I started towards the front. Thinned out half-way to the first buoy then got crowded again at the buoy. Up to the first buoy my form suffered I think from the shock of the cold water and crowd - drank a little water which threw me and I stopped for an instant to catch my breath and refocus. After the first buoy I got in the groove and focused on form, rounded the second buoy and headed into the beach happy I didn't drown. Missed the opportunity to bodysurf a few decent waves. Saw the family on the beach and their cheers really picked up my spirits - the kids ran with me to transition which was very cool. What would you do differently?: I will definitely swim to first buoy before race starts, try to be more calm at start, seriously focus on form. Transition 1
Comments: Happy with my first ever T1. What would you do differently?: Will not pour water on sandy feet - could have saved a few secs there. Bike
Comments: Had some trouble getting feet into shoes while going up Pier Ave. Feet were numb from cold and struggled a few times trying to feel my way into the shoes. Almost fell over going uphill and decided to climb hill THEN put feet in shoes. Not too crowded on Lap 1, but last two laps were pretty crowded and there was not a lot of passing room. Felt cold most of the bike and feet were numb with cold. Tried to drink some water, but it was too crowded. On my first lap I saw the accident and was more focused on not crashing than maintaining form and speed. Only got over the bars a few times. What would you do differently?: Check race day temps and switch to cold weather insoles or wear toe covers. Focus more on maintaining speed and aero form. Drink more and probably eat some gel. Transition 2
Comments: Dismount area / transition area was kind of a bottleneck and was crowded - waited about 5-10 secs to enter. On the way to the rack ran by several people casually walking their bikes. What would you do differently?: T2 was okay, but could have ran faster to rack. Run
Comments: Not happy with my run. Feet were still freezing numb and felt like bricks - could not feel them when I was putting on running shoes. Didn't feel feet until about 2 miles in. Had trouble catching breath on first mile. Felt sluggish and out of energy. Last mile I managed to pick up the pace and passed a dozen or so and a few in my AG. Sighted the Finish and smiled that I was about to complete my first Triathlon! What would you do differently?: Control breathing at start of run, drink more, do more bike/run bricks, run more dumbass. Post race
Warm down: Had water and banana. Saw the family and hugged everyone. Awesome feeling of accomplishment. What limited your ability to perform faster: Need to work more on bike fitness base and running endurance. Also need to work on staying aero and hammering pedals. Event comments: First race - so not much to compare it to. Was very organized and a fun event. Will be back next year and will finish under 60 mins! Last updated: 2008-09-11 12:00 AM

This was my first triathlon and I was way anxious. Family and I stayed the night at a buddy's house who lives in Manhatten Beach to minimize race day driving. Managed a couple of hours of sleep, but most of the night I was thinking about the race and checking the watch for fear of oversleeping. Got out of bed at 4:30, had some fruit, toast, OJ and coffee. Got to transition at 5:30 and set up on a rack that was near the back of the transition area.
Stretched a little, walked up and down Strand for about 20 mins. Mostly tried to stay warm. Took a dip in the ocean about 15 mins before my wave started, but wussed out getting the face/head wet. Sand was very cold which made the water temp feel less chilly, but the feet were definitely becoming brick-like.
