Comments: The problem with the wheels falling of in the swim, they tend to sink. I was out like a shot, excited with the suprise that we had the option to do a deep water start, got to be out with the big boys. Idiot. Was flying along, got some decent drafting in for the first 800 meters, then started getting a cramp in my chest, had to slow down, heartrate was WAY up. Slowed the pace down, as I rounded the 3rd turn and was greeted by 1' - 1.5' high swells. I was sucking in a ton of water, getting thrown around and my form went from swim to flail. Managed to keep going, stopped front crawl and had to go to breaststroke a few times due to inhaling so much water. Managed to get it together, chased down a few guys and managed to beat them out of the water. What would you do differently?: Not too sure what is going on with the swim, the stroke seems to be wrong but I sure seem to have lost power and speed. Time in the water I guess, just need more training time ![]() Transition 1
Comments: Kind of lost focus on the change over, bit of a run from the water to the rack, had to run to the mount line after putting the shoes on even though all the pros and a bunch of others had their shoes clipped on, I played by the rules and ran with the shoes on. What would you do differently?: Stay focused, push faster and get out the door faster. Might have lost 30 to 60 secs. ![]() Bike
Comments: As far as bike races go, this would have to be in the top 3. I was calm, very focused on my game plan and still managed to be fast. My race plan for the bike; have a good run. That meant I HAD to keep my HR low and in the right range. My HR went as high as 171 but that was only for a quick hil climb while getting rid of a roadie trying to keep up. The only time I was passed was by a 24 year old with a disk, and that was only for about 5km when i caught up to him and taught him that it was my road, not his and he'd have to wait till I was done with it! Not too much to say about the ride, other than I felt great about flying by so many people like they were pylons....pylons riding too far to the left and that were spilling their water bottles, gels and bags of gummy bears or whatever they had in those hundreds of ziplock bags What would you do differently?: Yell ON YOUR LEFT to even more people, destroy even more people's race plans by speeding by them throwing their little baggies back at them. Buy a P4, strap a phaser on the aerobars and set it to STUN! ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Got in, changed, chatted with a few volunteers, they screamed at me to get going....not too sure if they were cheering for me or if I was really THAT nasty. I vote for cheering. What would you do differently?: Less chatting, more running out onto the course. ![]() Run
Comments: Wow. This was one of the hardest runs ever for me. Not an excuse but a lot of people said the same thing. Really hot, not enough nutrition for the last part of the bike (oh yeah, found out later I had over half my aero bottle full of Infinit DOH!) and a lack of run training made a formulation of a poor run. 2 hours? I babied it on my bike and had no cramps but I just didn't have it in me. Game plan was to see if I would cramp on the bike if my HR was lowered, I didn't cramp so now I have my full race plan for IM Canada. What would you do differently?: Do a whack load more run training. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Pft, as I said, Crazypop beat me many times over the weekend and this was another. He had been waiting for me for 45 minutes, so I grabbed some pizza (even though there were a lot of people being ill with pizza in hand) some cookies and a few drink boxes, went looking for the family, loaded the bikes and gear bags into the Jeep, headed for home, showered then went out for some dinner. Back home and fell into bed. Good day over all. What limited your ability to perform faster: Gravity, wind resistance and the continued tuning down of the purchase of a $10,000 bicycle by my wife. And maybe a lack of quality training....but mostly the bike thing..... Event comments: TONNES of great volunteers with amazing attitudes made this race. It was the first year this race has gone on, I think everyone should shut the hell up about the stupid little things they think is the responsibility of the RD and just loosen up, I think they did a great job. I'll never do the race again but I think they did great for year one. Last updated: 2008-09-11 12:00 AM

Drove out to Calgary after picking up Crazypop, stayed at his place on Friday night, drinking and watching movies, we had a pillow fight. It was the first of many victories he would hold over me for the weekend.
We got into Calgary on Friday afternoon (after getting a little lost, my fault) and made our way to my parent's place.
Saturday morning we went down to the Expo to check out the stuff and get our race packages. I managed to get out of there without spending too much, mind you I did find a bunch of nice jackets and swag to touch including a P4 calling my name....hmmmm, I wonder......after looking at all the stuff, we headed home, #'ed the bikes then rove out to Cochrane to drop off the bikes in T1 then drove the course, sweeping all the Bud and Miller glass off the road.
After building up some good karma points, we headed to my brother and wife's house for the ritual dinner of spagetti with a bunch of kids running around. Very relaxing......... finished there, headed for home and fell into bed where I tossed and turned until after midnight..... Mom woke me up at 0418, asking me if we were suppose to get up, I smashed my head on the upper bunk, (I was sleeping in a bunk bed the the grandkids sleep in) swore a bunch, then woke up Dan. Mom drove us down to the pick up spot where we were shuttled to the race start..... it begins
Not too sure of why but my AG started 1:30 hours after the first wave. I watched the pros go, Dan, a bunch of other people I know, cheered them all on, then after they all left, we swam. I did a 5 minute warm up in the lake to work out the jitters.
