Pre-race routine:

Drank and stayed up real late. HAHAHA!!! Not this time, ate well, had zero booze and was in bed earlier than usual. I would have thought that I would have done a bit better than I did. Hmm. Back to the bottle next race I suppose.
Event warmup:

Had a couple cups of java, toast and P&J, walked the dog, loaded the jeep then Kari and I drove out to the University. Messed with my mind that we were driving to the race and at 0930. Latest start to a race ever. Got parked, unloaded, walk the bike to T area, saw Leah with her spiffy yellow vest looking all Official and Important. She looked at my chinstrap and gave me the thumbs up. I set up, walked to sign in / chip pick up then watched the earlier heats in the pool.

Seeded myself upfront, about 8 from the front. Worked out well, I was passed by one guy and a girl. The girl was a goof, passed us then dogged it for the last 400 meters. Whatever, everyone had a good time and that is what counts. My swim strength and form were a bit lacking but since buggering up my shoulder in early December and not being able to train as much as I wanted, but things are a bit better now, so we'll see how things go with future training.
What would you do differently?:

Just more training.

Lesson learned from last year, use the run from the pool to the T1 to get dressed so this time I got my gloves, shirt and toque on by the time I got to the rack. Grabbed the shoes, and all the other stuff, the clip-clopped to the mount line. Looked down as I jumped on, clipping in at the same time realizing that I was on the big ring, and over I went. down onto the pavement. In front of everyone. Nice one slick. Picked myself up and peddled down the road. Away from the hurtful laughter.
What would you do differently?:

Defy gravity and make sure I am in the proper gear to start riding.

Screaming by all the people on mountain bike and road bikes that are 20 years old and made of steel should not make me feel better about myself but I am just shallow enough that it does. I did have to yell "ON YOUR LEFT" a lot but I can't get mad at people that have no experience racing. I knew my hams were tight (as they always are) so I was trying to take it easy. Blasting by people like they are standing still made that hard. Again a lack of training compared to last year hurt my time and preformance but I pushed on regardless. I do love biking. I did get passed once but I think he was a Sprint guy. F me was he moving. Not too much to say about the bike ride, I went as fast as i could while being comfy but slow enough so that nothing blew up.
What would you do differently?:

Training and stretching.

Managed a stylin' dismount, ran on frozen feet to the rack, racked up, shoes off, shoes on, helmet off then out the door.

My feet felt like they were asleep, which is to say I couldn't feel them at all. It took 3 KMs until blood was flowing back through my legs. I figured my main goal was to not stop, I remembered last year I was cramped up from going too hard on the bike so this time I just pushed through the little jolts of cramping my legs were giving me as well as some minor shin splints. One guy managed to pass me on the run at the 6 KM mark which bothered me a bit but then I figured there were a bunch of people gaining on me that I just couldn't see. Stupid wave races.
What would you do differently?:

Stretch the damned hams man. They kill me every run at every race.

Warm down:

None. Packed up, grabbed Kari, kissed her and thanked her a bunch for standing in the cold cheering me on again. Love her lots, I don't understand how or why she does it.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pure and simple; training. Or the lack of.

Good race again. Like it as the start of the year event.
